Carpeteers Match Reviews

DATE OPPOSITION SCORE MATCH REPORT
23/07/2010     Famous      W 2-1
This huge match was billed as the clash of the titans. In one corner you had all the all conquering runaway league defending champions, The Famous. In the other you had a rejigged but massively in form Carpeteers, fresh from their stunning win in the Lee Jago memorial cup last Saturday and the 5 goal drubbing of Londis the day before. What was to follow certainly didn't disappoint as both teams were well up for it from the start and were to dish up a mouth-watering 5 star , edge of your seat match that everyone wanted to see. Carps lined up with Gav in goal, Warbz and Ricko in defence, Craig just in front of them and then Andy and Geachy alternating between midfield and up front. Carps set their stall out perfectly, to nullify the ultimate danger man in Frankie M'Acavoy and to cut the angles so to give their forward players no room. This was executed to sheer perfection throughout. Virtually all the attacks of any meaning were coming from Carpeteers and the Famous keeper was being worked overtime and he made several stunning saves until Carps had a free kick from an acute angle. Hoops was heard to say 'it is ok having a free kick but we will never score from that'. an how he was made to eat his words for the umpteenth time as Craig shot a truly brilliant low shot into the near corner and completely outfox the whole Famous team. You could literally feel the frustration rise amongst Famous players as they began to niggle at each other, Carps had them on the ropes and Gareth Geach was proving to be unplayable for the second week running. One attack in particular saw Carps soak up the pressure and Geachy broke away on his own with just one Famous defender and GK to beat, he jinked from one side to the other and unleashed a swerving left footed drive that smacked the top of the post so hard i swear it must have dented it! gasps of awe and disbelief echoed around the Poltair astro as the ball smashed to safety. Chance after chance came and only excellent goalkeeping was keeping it at 1 0, until Carps were hit with the ultimate sucker punch. A world class draw in and break attack from M'Acavoy and co resulted in a Famous free kick and Frankie tricked Carps by toe poking the ball and it took a wicked deflection off a defender and just out of Gav's reach. Groans were heard from Hoops who was working overtime up and down the touchline as we should really have been at least 2 or maybe 3 up by then. Half time came soon after and Famous went into the break with their tails up, but how were Famous to be rocked to the core yet again as Carps showed true courage and superb team play and an absolutely phenomenal set piece worked between Craig and Geachy resulted in the latter slotting into the net from close range. Nothing more than Carpeteers deserved. Gav had to make 2 excellent saves from Frankie and Co but Warbz was truly awesome in defence, organising everything and staying at last man. In Chris we have found a no nonsense guy who gives nothing less than 100%, we look a much safer bet when he plays at the back for us. Ricko, yet again, played out of his best position but ran himself ragged, harassing anyone who had the ball. Andy is nothing less than essential to Carpeteers, when he doesn't play we are not the same team, he, as always was truly superb tonight. Craig proved yet again that he is without doubt the best free kick specialist at Poltair on a Friday, his goal was world class as was his timing for Geachy's winner and that is where this report finishes...with Geachy. he got the winner, but this was about far more
than a winning goal, it was as near to perfection a performance as you could possibly get. On this form Gareth is THE best striker at Poltair, no questions. Tonight a 10/10 would not do him justice, not only was he utterly brilliant in attack but he was everywhere, in midfield and even defence too.
the final whistle was wound down to by some safety play and desperate attempts from Famous to snatch what would be a devastating equaliser, but, in truth, Carps mopped up any half chances with comparative ease. A fantastic 3 points and as good as a performance tactically and as a team as i have probably ever seen from a Carpeteers side.

16/07/2010     Londis      W 5-0 After a tight first half Carpeteers tore sorry Londis apart with a rampaging attack of football that inflicted Londis with their worst defeat in years. Gareth Geach and Scott Laughton [ his first Carp goals ] found the net twice each with Gareth Geach bringing up his Carps goals to a century.Andy Geach also scored to take his tally to 35 goals. Despite gunning down Londis in attack, the Carpeteers defence was as solid as a rock with Ricko and new signing Warbz [ Chris Warburton ] holding the line brilliantly while stand in keeper Craig Phillips [ the cat ] pulled off the saves when needed with consummate ease.

09/07/2010     LolCambell      W 3-0 It was a walkover tonight as our opposition failed to even turn up and didn't let anybody know. A friendly vs Chesney followed and Hoops played a part without any injury concerns this week after limping out of last weeks match after just 1 touch of the ball.

02/07/2010     Chesney      D 2-2 Carps had to make do without prolific striker Craig Phillips and new keeper Kai Stone as a daunting task awaited them in the form of Chesney Utd. Carps pressed hard early and deserved their goal when Gareth Geach finished off a nice move. Chesney, as expected, hit back to lead 2-1 and the game now looked an uphill task for the Carps. However, a determined run down the right by Ricko and an accurate pass found Andy Geach in plenty of space to slot home past former keeper Ozzie. It was most certainly a point gained for the men in orange.

25/06/2010     Jailers      D 1-1 Jailers were billed as title favourites along with Famous at the start of the season but were given a stern test against a tough Carpeteers side who were without goalkeeper Kai Stone and top scorer Craig Phillips. Carps pressed hard early on and it was Damon Mulready who fired home the opening goal with a good break down the left wing. Jailers came back determined but couldn't score before half time. A rare blip all night from a corner gave Jailers their chance and they took it. The game was in the balance for the final 10 minutes with both sides looking dangerous and a draw was just about a fair result. When other sides got hammered on the night by other rivals, both teams will be glad with a point.

11/06/2010     Puls8      L 0-2 Both teams went into this game confident of victory, but a new look Puls8 team, with Bobby Lee Johns back from injury, just had the edge. Gary Grierson was outstanding in defence for Puls8. Bruce Campbell opened the scoring in the first half and Dean Collinson added a second for Puls8 to kill off Carpeteers revival when they were threatening to level the scores.

04/06/2010     Tesco      W 2-1

Old adversaries Carps & Tesco locked horns again and the predicted tight match definitely took place. Carps were rocked to the core with the news that gk Shaun 'Moley' Hicks would be missing for the entire season and had to act quickly, bringing in Kai Stone between the sticks. Gav, Rick, Craig, Andy and Geachy completed the starting line up, with Hoops warming the bench. It was gripping stuff from the first whistle with both teams defences on top, until Andy unleashed an unstoppable half volley from 20 yards that left the Tesco keeper with no chance, Carps just about deserved the lead, but back roared Tesco and a well worked goal ended with an equally unstoppable low drive that left Kai no chance. Tesco were using the width very well, but in return Carps broke a number of times and only excellent interceptions stopped Geachy and Craig from goal scoring opportunities. Gav and Rick were being worked overtime and midway through the second half it looked like a draw, until Craig was hauled down 15 yards out and Craig, dusted himself down and let rip a brilliant cross goal thunderbolt into the top right hand corner of the net. 2 - 1 and try as they might Tesco were not going to come back again. A very fine result and a gritty performance against the team who finished third last season.

NEW SEASON    28/05/2010     Famous      L 1-3 For the 1st time in our history we had to play the same team 2 weeks running. Coincidence? Or is it because we're Carpeteers and Famous are runaway Champions of the Premiership? Well yes, we met them again tonight for the opening game of our 10th season. Famous knew they were in a game right from the start as Damon Mulready had his shot tipped onto the crossbar and Ricko's turn and volley was tipped round the post for a corner. Gareth Geach's pressure broke the deadlock when a Famous clearance deflected in off Geach's body and into the side of the net for a deserved lead. Famous equalised with their first attack after 12 minutes when Ian Superman couldn't get down quick enough to palm the shot away. Famous got an even easier 2nd goal when Superman tried to kick the ball away instead of use his hands...bizarre stuff from a goaly...but made a class save moments later to deny a certain Famous win. As Carps pushed hard for the leveller with Andy Geach in attack, Famous did get their 3rd with Carps players up the pitch. With Ian Superman storming away at the end without paying it is clear that Shaun Moley Hicks' absence as our main goalkeeper due to a broken arm, is going to prove a costly one already.  © Ricko
21/05/2010 - CUP QF GROUP STAGES     Famous      L 0-2 The disastrous run of form in the knockout stages of the cup continues as Carpeteers crashed out at the QF stages of the main cup for the second season running. Things were always going to be tough against the Premiership champions Famous, but Carps took it to their rivals from the start. However, Famous defended well and limited any chances to just half chances and they got their usual break away goal to lead. As Carps went for the jugular in the final minutes, the defence was left vulnerable, and Famous sealed the win with another goal. During the match, both Geach brothers limped off with injuries. Famous failed to do the league / cup double when they later lost in the final.  © Ricko
14/05/2010 - CUP GROUP STAGES     Jedi Mind Tricks      W 8-1 Carpeteers won their cup group in some style tonight and made it the 2nd biggest win in the history of the team. Craig Phillips banged in 3 goals to claim yet another hat trick, while the electric Gareth Geach seemed to score with every attack, ending up with 5 goals. The likes of Ricko and Moley at the back had very little to deal with despite Scott Laughton grabbing a late consolation, before limping off injured. JMT have not recovered since team founder Tom Lal found things a little too tough at Cornwall 6 a side and ran away from the teams poor results, leaving the team organisation to others. They should improve with 1 or 2 new signings. For Carps, it is a place in the main cup draw next week.© Ricko
    07/05/2010 - CUP GROUP STAGES      Londis      W 3-2
It was nearly a year ago to the day that the Carpeteers crashed out to a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Londis in the Shield QF. Tonight was another story however as Carps [ without captain Ricko and vice skipper Craig Phillips ] led 3-0 at half time with another superbly taken goal from Shaun Moley Hicks [ better known for his goalkeeping work ] and 2 goals from an on fire Gareth Geach. It seemed the game was over, but some lapses of concentration during the 2nd period nearly cost Carps the game as Londis fought back to 3-2, and only some last ditch Gavin Kitts defending and good stops from stand in keeper Alan from Moles Army, kept the scores how they were. Carps had late chances with Gareth Geach having several fizzing efforts blocked by a hard working Londis goalkeeper.

    30/04/2010 - CUP GROUP STAGES      White Cobras      W 3-1
The Carps line up was heavily changed for the CUP tournament tonight as Damon Mulready replaced injured Ricko at the back, Shaun Hicks moved to centre forward in place of the still injured Craig Phillips and Ian Superman Newcombe took charge between the sticks. White Cobras are 3rd division bound but took a shock lead tonight via a looping deflection that Superman could do nothing with. Andy Geach rallied the troops and when Carps got a penalty after pressing, Damon Mulready fired home from the spot to score his first Carps goal. Damon smashed home his 2nd during the second half from the edge of the Cobras box and Moley Hicks was rewarded with a fine finish after working hard all night. Damon was denied a possible hat trick when a clear cut penalty was not given by referee Bob.

    23/04/2010      Neil Truan      W 1-0
This defeat of Neil Truan condemned them to the Championship division. They never gave in as they pushed to grab an equaliser near the end but Carps had wasted a hatful of chances earlier on that could have put the game to rest. Carps front men Gareth and Andy Geach having an off night while Ricko cut through the Truan backline only to see his shot go tamely wide. It was Ricko's charging run through the middle and through ball to Andy Geach that won the game for Carps as Andy slotted in from a near impossible angle. This was a good end to the season for Carpeteers as 4th spot was achieved and 4 wins in the last 5 matches.

    16/04/2010      Chenpump      W 1-0
Carps had conceded a record equalling 5 goals last week and Chenpump had let in a record 8 goals in a defeat to Puls8 but tonight the defences were both rock solid. Carpeteers pushed hard for an early goal and got one when top Carps scorer Craig Phillips popped up yet again. The latter stages of the match were dominated by a very hard battling Chenpump but Gav Kitts and Ricko held firm in the Carps defence, with telling contributions from a deeper sitting Gareth Geach and a returning Shaun Moley Hicks who commanded his goal area brilliantly..

    09/04/2010      Famous      L 3-5
Famous wrapped up the Premiership title here tonight with this win. Carpeteers dominated early proceedings before 2 Famous attacks mid way through the 1st half resulted in 2 goals that Carps did not deserve to concede. Famous were fast and fluent and led 3-0 at half time. Craig Phillips fired a goal back to keep the tie alive early in the 2nd half but Famous ran riot to lead 5-1 and had chances to be out of sight but decided to showboat instead of make sure. Carpeteers never gave in and Craig Phillips struck twice more to make things more respectable at the final whistle. This was only the 2nd time ever that Carps had conceded 5 goals in a game, the other being vs Tesco in a 5-0 drubbing in our 6th ever match way back in October 2006.

    26/03/2010      Chesney      W 1-0
Chesney had beaten Carpeteers in their last 3 meetings, but Carpeteers were glad to finally welcome back their full squad since the first game of the season. Chesney had mopped up some of the disbanded Furion rebels in an attempt to create a super team. Chesney's first half skill was impressive, and they dominated possession although both sides had few chances. The second half saw a dogged Carpeteers scrap and battle for every ball with real determination. Andy Geach hit a post as Carpeteers went closest to breaking the deadlock. As Chesney ran out of ideas against a stubborn Carps defence, Craig Phillips scored a trademark free kick that creeped in off a post leaving Chesney hero goalkeeper Ozzie helpless on this occasion. Hippo Hoops danced at the side lines as the rain came down, and the Carps fear of going down was all but forgotten.

    19/03/2010      Furions      W 3-0
A default win as Furions have pulled out of the league after several good seasons at the top. They finished runners up in the Premiership last season which was their best result. They couldn't raise a team to play this game tonight.

© Ricko

    12/03/2010      Puls8Dbs      L 1-3
Puls8 had a strong team out tonight and quickly took advantage of a depleted Carpeteers side who were desperate for a win to avoid the Premiership relegation battle. Puls8 were 3 up early in the second half until a returning Andy Geach was introduced to the Carps midfield after a 4 week lay off with injury. Carps battled well in the remaining 10 minutes and Gareth Geach pulled a goal back before Damon Mulready cracked the post from the left wing. However, Puls8 held firm to get a vital win.

    05/03/2010      Team Supreme      D 1-1
Things are getting twitchy in the Carps camp with relegation a possibility for the first time in many seasons. The injury crisis continued tonight with first teamers Andy Geach and Gav Kitts both crocked for the foreseeable future. Team Supreme may have been bottom, but they drew with Carps 3-3 last time and came out of the blocks quickest tonight as they grabbed a 1 nil lead early on with the wind in their favour. Their danger man Scott Laughton returned for them tonite after a long injury lay off and stood in as goalkeeper. What a decision that was, as he denied several good chances from Geach and Craig with the woodwork also coming to the rescue twice. Carps continued their assault in the 2nd half but again Scott Laughton saved everything they threw at him and Craig Phillips hit the post yet again. Team Supreme continued to be dangerous on the counter attack. Laughton finally grabbed the star man award when saving a 25 yard top corner bound half volley from Ricko with 5 minutes to play, somehow tipping it onto the crossbar and away, to the almighty groans from assistant manager Hoops on the sidelines. Carps deserved their last minute equaliser from Craig Phillips though but Team Supreme can thank Scott Laughton for keeping the score at 1-1.

    19/02/2010              Puls8 DBs      W 3-1
This was shit hits the fan time and against our old adverseries Puls8DB's who themselves are scrapping for their lives. Such is Carps luck this season, our opponents had a very strong side out, including Johns and Dingle, blood would be spilt tonight! Hoops knew he had to ensure that somehow we HAD to get a win and he started with Lee Harvey in midfield. Lee shone in this position it has to be said and he started a great move that resulted in Craig putting Geachy through and a bullet finish made it 1 0 to Carps. But back came DB's and Grylls soon equalised. Hoops yelled for everyone to pull together and before the lads had a chance to even take in what he was shouting, a major collision between Johns of DB's and Gav Kitts midway inside the Carps half resulted in Johns walking away shrugging his shoulders and Gav writhing in agony and two very nearly detached knackers in his shorts, blood streaming from his knee and elbow and he ended up having to be helped from the pitch, that was that for Gav and Hoops had to very quickly rearrange things, pushing Lee into defence alongside Damo and Dashy coming on in midfield. Gav's injury only seemed to encourage the boys as the capacity crowd watched in awe as a silky smooth Carps attack was crisply finished from Craig into the bottom corner. There followed some 'heart in the mouth' moments for Carps, including a rightly disallowed, but all the same stunning volleyed 'goal' from Dingle, before a brilliantly taken quick free kick from Craig was superbly anticipated from Stevie Dash and he cooly finished from 12 yards. Game over and a hard fought but crucial and very much deserved 3 points for Carpeteers, who return to action on 5th March but already have grave fitness doubts over Moley, Gav, Craig, Andy and Hoops!

The Carpeteers saga continues!

    19/02/2010              Tesco      L 1-3
Carsp went into tonight's crucial double header knowing that they needed some points on the board, but they were once again hit by the unavailable Moley, Ricko, Andy and Hoops, Hoops taking the caretaker manager role for the night. Superman in goal and lee Harvey came into the fold. Carps started brightly and Craig and Geach combined for the latter to hammer an unstoppable trademark shot across the keeper and into the bottom right hand corner to give Carps the lead. But back roared Tesco and not only did they withstand everything including the kitchen sink that Carps had to throw at them, they had Ben Thomas, whose quick double put Tesco 2 1 up. The heads dropped and all the encouragement Hoops could give wasn't enough as a joke of a decision from the ref gave Thomas the opportunity he needed to complete his hat trick. Game over, but this was a performance from Carps that was a massive improvement from the previous weeks debacle, but somehow didn't give us the draw - at least - that we deserved.

    12/02/2010              Chenpump      L 0-2
Carps continued their indifferent form and made it 6 games without a win after crashing to another defeat against bogey team Chenpump. It has been a nightmare season as Carps were unable to call upon the services of keeper Moley, main defender Gav Kitts, Craig Phillips and Hoops, and emergency loan deals for former GK Jason Hoare, Ben Hemingway and Carl Webster all broke down. We would like to place on record though thanks to Mike Harwood and Nathan Ball who came to our aid. Andy Geach had to play only 50% fit due to a foot injury and the mix and match Carps team struggled to make much of a serious inroad to the Chenpump goal, although every credit should be given to them for an excellent performance. Garrth Geach started the game in defence as a tactical choice but once we were 2 down at half time, Hoops changed it around as we had nothing to lose. It made little difference and Geachy was nullified despite his best efforts and those of the team. Carps now find themselves in a position where they must seriously start to get some points as although they have games in hand, they must be turned into points. A double header next week of Tesco and Puls8DB's is a massive evening for Carpeteers. Ricko and Moley will be unavailable, while Andy and Hoops are likely to be out for the rest of the season. Ricko and Hoops are looking to bring in some fresh faces loaned for the rest of the season..watch this space!  © Hoops
29/01/2010              Boyzone      D 1-1  With the pressure on, Carpeteers failed to take their chances in a game they really had to win to stay alive in the title race. Boyzone , unbelievably took the lead in a rare attack early in the second half. It wasnt for lack of trying but the ball would not fall kindly for anyone tonight as even the usually reliable Craig Phillips could not get a clean cut chance at goal. Boyzone keeper Pete Haley dealt with everything thrown at him. Boyzone should have increased their lead when hitting the upright with 5 minutes to go as Carps pushed for an equaliser. In the final minute of the match, Ricko picked out a darting run from Andy Geach from a free kick, and Andy struck the ball into the bottom corner to salvage a point and put himself top of the Carps scoring charts for the season. However, Carpeteers are now 5 games without a win, and an F.A investigation hangs over them next week for other problems.  © Ricko
22/01/2010              Famous      D 1-1 A magical contest of brutal end to end football that Carpeteers will wonder how they never actually won this game. Carps attacks on the Famous goal were immense as Famous play light at the back, and heavy on attack. The pressure finally told when they gave away a needless penalty which Craig Phillips tucked away well. Carps dominated the second half as the crossbar and the post of the Famous goal came to their rescue. Carps though, left too many men forward on one of their attacks and got punished by a side who usually score goals for fun. Damon Mulready helped out the Carps defence tonight with his 2nd match for the team [ his last was on 22/2/2008 ] and did a solid job, but overall this was points lost in the title race. © Ricko
15/01/2010              Chesney      L 1-2  A massive game for both sides after a break of several weeks due to snow and the xmas period. Chesney took the lead during the 2nd half after nothing would give during the first period. The Carps struggled to create clear cut chances until a moment of genius from Craig Phillips with a little flick over Richard Thompson's head [ made him look very silly ] and volley into the goal sent the Carps supporters wild. However, it was Thompson who had the last laugh, as his run on goal and shot sneaked in the corner past a helpless Gav Kitts [ who filled in for the absent Moley ] It was harsh on Carpeteers but Chesney are tough to beat these days. © Ricko
11/12/2009              Furions      D 0-0 Carpeteers welcomed back defenders Gavin Kitts and Ricko Barker to the team after conceding 3 disappointing goals last week to bottom side Team Supreme. These 2 teams are 2 of the longest serving in the Premiership and know each other very well which resulted in an even contest full of strong tackles and few clear cut chances. Shaun 'Moley' Hicks was rarely tested from close range in the Carps goal, while at the other end, Gareth Geach's long range drive struck the cross bar, and Craig Phillip's late header was also tipped onto the upright by the Furions goalkeeper.  © Ricko
04/12/2009    Team Supreme    D 3-3 The Carps solid defence was hit with the news that both defenders, Gavin Kitts and Ricko Barker would be missing for this game. However, Carpeteers have aspirations of winning the title this season after a fantastic start to the season and had the perfect start here against bottom club Team Supreme with a first half hat trick out of the blue from playmaker Andy Geach, who's screaming shots were unstoppable.Scott Laughton managed to pull a goal back for Team Supreme before half time. The second half was all one-way traffic as Team Supreme showed the form of two years ago and Laughton pulled another goal back before Nathan Sussex scored a deserved equaliser, leaving Carpeteers to ponder their second half performance.© G.Gapper [modified by Ricko]
20/11/2009    Tesco    W 6-0 Tesco are back in the Premiership and were 2 wins from 2 before tonight. However, Carpeteers were at their brilliant best and totally outclassed the Championship winners from last season. The game was over by half time as at 5-0 there was no way back. It was a night of all sorts of record breaking as Gareth Geach notched his 8th Carps hat trick to move ahead of Craig Phillips who has 7. Geach last scored a hat trick 61 games ago in a 6-1 win against Love Bunnies. Carpeteers had not scored a win as good as this since destroying Puls 8 in a 6-0 win back in July 2008. Andy Geach opened the scoring with 2 goals tonight before his brother Gareth grabbed his 3...and Steve Dash put the icing on the cake by moving ahead of Jim Martyn in the all time Carps scoring charts, and is now joint 6th with former Carps flop Daniel Nicholls. It must also be noted that despite not getting on the score sheet, Craig Phillips, Ricko Barker and Gav Kitts [ GK] were all excellent in defence to keep a superb clean sheet. Hoops was ecstatic with it all from the dug out. © Ricko
    30/10/2009    Boyzone    W 3-0
This was always going to be a match where Carps wanted revenge for the filthy challenges of our previous meeting where Craig and Geachy saw blue. Carpeteers lined up with Moley between the sticks, Craig, Gav, Ricko, Andy and Geachy. No one really took a particular position and it certainly kept the Boyzone players guessing. Early exchanges saw decent saves from both keepers and it was easy to see why Boyzone had won the cup 2 weeks before. They used the width of the pitch excellently and were giving us plenty of problems, however Carps were giving as good as they got and a push on Craig gave us a great opportunity to open the scoring. From what appeared to be another infringement by their keeper, Craig buried the resultant penalty to give us a crucial lead. It was without doubt the turning point as Carps then began to spray the ball around with aplomb and were closing the Boyzone players down far more quickly as Hoops was screeching them to do so from the technical area. And it resulted in a 2nd goal as Geachy harrassed and chased forcing a shocking error, Geachy intercepted and made no mistake from 15 yards. No more than Geachy deserved as he was excellent tonight. To Boyzones credit they kept going but a 3rd goal for the Carps soon came and again it was Geachy who slid home from an angle to complete a fine win.

he just nicks the bubbly as his excellent saves kept it at 0-0 before our crucial breakthrough. Without doubt the signing of the season.

23/10/2009    Neil Truan Motors    W 2-1 Carpeteers got off to a good start as the New Premier League season kicked off. Carps have now won their last 3 matches against Neil Truan, who had their best finish in the Prem last season in 4th. Truan were the first to score tonight in an even first half in foggy and miserable conditions. New signing Shaun Hicks was out as Gav Kitts went between the sticks for the clash but could do nothing for their goal. Carps won the game with determination and 2 excellently tactical goals from Craig Phillips, who confused the Truan defence by attacking their goal when he should have been sweeping at the back. That's a good start.

16/10/2009 [ cup ]    City Boys    L 0-4

The shock of the night came in the very first game on pitch 1 as high flying Carpeteers crashed to a heavy defeat to the just relegated City Boys.

In truth Carps were outplayed and outfought by a City Boys team hell bent on upsetting the form book, but it should be said they were over physical to say the least and the ref jibbed a number of crucial decisions, but take nothing away from City Boys who deserved the win. This was Carpeteers heaviest defeat in an astonishing 168 games, going way back to 13th October 2006, over 3 years ago. Carps must learn the mistakes from tonight and correct them quickly for the start of the new premier league season next week.

09/10/2009 [ cup ]    Burton    W 3-0
The scoreline completely flattered Burton tonight as Carpeteers ran riot against a Burton side high on confidence after a fine start to their own cup campaign and promotion to The Championship.

Carps gave a debut to Shaun 'Moley' Hicks in goal and the new man between the sticks had a match that had everyone drooling with a faultless display of pinpoint throwing, which found his own player every time. This really could be the most astute signing of the year and instill a new resurgence in confidence in Carps 4th campaign in the Premier League. One back header from the excellent Craig seemed to be heading into his own net but Moley was down like a sack of spuds to fingertip it away. It was wave after wave of attacks from a superb Carps team and on this display, Ricko and Hoops will find it hard to break back into the side! An early attack from the right of one touch slick passing, ended with Stevie Dash completing flummexing the Burton keeper with a tap in when the ball seemed to be heading in the other direction. Dashy never ever lets you down and thats 2 goals in 2 games from the most unselfish player you could ever have in your side. A fully deserved goal as well. The Burton goalie made a number of fine saves keeping the scoreline down. Geachy was being hacked to bits by the little ginger cunt we all know so well and after what seemed the 50th kick on Geachy, the ref gave another freekick and the gingernut literally lost his nut and hammered the ball a mile away over the gates, giving the ref no option than to brandish a straight blue card for dissent (i think). A quite brilliant freekick blew everyone away as instead of a straight shot, a dummy from Geachy let Craig pass the ball to the left and a hammerhead of a shot from Andy was palmed away. Stunning stuff from The Carps that fully deserved a goal. But it wasn't to be long before another came and a move from Moley in goal and a deft flick from midfield left Geachy in acres of space and he nonscholently flicked the ball over to the side of the approaching keeper and into the back of the net, this was real football at its best and showed that Geachy was right back and when he plays like this, no one can handle him. Gav was faultless all night a nd the original 'ball in the car park' attitude of no nonsense defending that made Kittsy a household name was back...and how! Surely a call up to the England ranks beckons? another wave of attacks resulted in another goal and this time a trademark Geachy screamer! Slick one touch stuff had Geachy screaming down the left and an absolute rocket of a shot across their gk gave him no chance and it burst the net in the far right hand corner. The capacity crowd were all up on their feet! If this had been a 40 minute full length match it could have been a cricket score, and that is not down to Burton playing poorly, but purely down to just how magnificent the 6 lads were tonight.

Man of the Match - Gareth Geach

This was Gareth back to his very best. He just sneaks it for his 2nd goal ahead of debutant Moley who's throwing was awesome. Every time he found a Carps player and that resulted in an attack

02/10/2009 [ cup ]    Clearwater    W 2-0 Our second game of the night was against another fairly new team in Clearwater. On this performance, Clearwater will be a real force to be reckoned with in the coming season and they caused Carps plenty of problems, especially early on with their height and power. Ben had a storming game in goal and saved two certain goals with his amazing prowess and agility between the sticks. But yet again the Carps were a constant threat going forward and every time looked like scoring. The Clearwater keeper had an outstanding game and just when you thought it was going to be one of those games, the impressive stand in Anthony Stone popped up to get his 1st goal for Carpeteers, putting us 1- 0 up. To their credit Clearwater kept plugging away but started to run out of ideas and when Geachy scored a completely awesome 2nd goal it was goodnight Vienna! This was another highly outstanding performance from The Carps. After finishing the league 3rd and with 3pts more than the previous season, the cup was to be seen as ‘whatever happens happens’, in preparation for the new league season, but after a third straight win and 3 clean sheets to boot, a newly found confidence has appeared. Geachy has had a lean time of late but scored a goal that had everyone out of their seats and the echoes of applause were heard around the smog covered shanty villages of the surrounding area. Man of the match was Craig for his all round bravery in defence and superb goal and creative play, closely followed by the mercurial Ben in goal, but in truth, everyone played wonderfully.

02/10/2009 [ cup ]    Eden    W 2-0 The first of two cup games tonight was against a newly formed but nonetheless potentially very good Eden side. The Eden number 10, well known to Hoops & Ricko, was a constant threat but even so well marshalled by a rock solid Carps defence, restricting him and the Eden team as a whole to long distance efforts and never really troubled stand in Carps keeper Ben Hemingway. In truth it was going to be a matter of when Carps scored and attack after attack of smooth free flowing football between the whole team time after time, broke Eden for the umpteenth time. A foul on Geachy in the centre circle was quickly taken as Geachy jumped to his feet, brushed himself down and put the buccaneering Craig straight through and Craig made no mistake. Carps were forced into many changes with Ricko, Hoops, Andy and Moley all absent for various reasons. Standing in were Ben in goal, Dashy and Stoner. Ben had a fine game, Dashy was excellent, covering every blade of astro and making space at every opportunity and Stoner was brilliant mainly on the right. The attacks continued and it was no surprise when yet another one touch attack resulted in man of the match Dashy to bury the Carps second goal, thoroughly deserved by Dashy and the Carpeteers as a whole.

25/09/2009 [ cup ]    Team Supreme    W 1-0 The 2nd game of the night was the start of the cup competition. Team Supreme will be back in the Premiership with Carpeteers next season after sneaking promotion this season. They have a good team of younger players and passed it around well. Gareth Geach's several charging runs down the left flank sadly came to nothing for the Carps until a Geach throw in found the wiley old fox Craig Phillips at the back of the D to head home. A late surge from Team Supreme found Gav Kitts in good form in the Carps goal, before time seemed to run out very quickly just as the game was getting interesting.
25/09/2009    Chenpump     W 2-1 Chenpump won this game 0-1 earlier in the season when the Carps were ravaged with injuries. It was a good even contest tonight but Chenpump took the lead in bizarre circumstances when the ball deflected into the Carps goal off a tracking back Andy Geach who knew little about it until the ball was in. Goalkeeper Gav Kitts dived but couldnt make it. Carps haven't let their heads drop in recent times when going behind and another top solo effort from Craig Phillips put things level. Carps began to get on top as the game wore on and a nice tee off from Craig to Andy Geach let Andy smash home the winning goal in style and make up for his unlucky oggy earlier on. This win put Carps into an overall 3rd place in the table for the season.
18/09/2009    City Boys     W 4-1 There was plenty of history to be made this evening as Craig Phillips went all out for his 100th Carps goal as the new astro surface was to be played upon for the first time.Carpeteers started as favourites after an earlier season 3-0 win over City Boys but the slippery new astro surface caught Carps out early and City Boys took the lead. Hoops [ wearing sandals with bandaged feet like Ghandi ] seemed confident of a comeback from the sidelines and Craig Phillips struck his 100th Carps goal before half time and a celebratory run around the pitch followed. He added another in half time stoppage time to send Carps in ahead at half time. Carps found plenty of space in the second half and Steven dash went close on several occasions before Craig Phillips brought up his hat trick and Ricko got forward from defence to nutmeg keeper Ian ' Superman ' Newcombe who had a good game as usual. Ricko also curled a shot onto a post with seconds remaining and Carps secured 3rd spot in the Premiership with one game still to play.
11/09/2009    Puls8Dbs     D 0-0 Always a tough team to beat, Puls8 have recently swung in and out of form. Tonight they were on form but didn't have many clear cut chances. Carpeteers had the better of the attacks with several wild shots from all players that didn't find the mark. Nathan Ball had a good game standing in for Gavin Kitts who played in goal as Jason Hoare has now retired due to work commitments. The terrible cut to pieces pitch was mostly to blame for both sides missed efforts and it will be good to get onto the new astro next week at long last.
28/08/2009    Psychic6     W 4-1 Psychic6 are new this season and will without doubt improve on this showing if they can avoid relegation. However, they were torn apart by a savage Carps side who, despite looking hungry for goals, seemed to be playing the strangest formation ever seen! 4 quick fire first half goals, 2 from Craig Phillips [ now on 99 Carpeteers goals ], a long range drive from Gareth Geach and a well worked move from Craig + Gareth to set up Andy to make it four, settled this tie in no time. Carps relaxed a bit in the 2nd half, sharing some good jokes with the ref who sent everyone off against Boyzone 2 weeks ago. One man who did not relax though was Carps goalie Jason Hoare, who made 4 or 5 WORLD CLASS stops to easily be named as man of the match. The goalie at the other end also had a good game. Psychic6 did pull a late goal back, but the damage had been done in the first half.
21/08/2009     Chesney     L 1-3 Chesney all but wrapped up the title with this victory. The game was spoilt in the 2nd minute with a controversial goal for Chesney that had everyone confused. Anyway, the ref gave the goal despite protests that the Chesney player may have crossed the D line. Chesney worked well and an unlucky deflection let them in to go 2 up. Carps bounced back when Craig Phillips fired in and it was game on again. Ricko and Craig both tested Ozzie in goal, as did the very busy Steve Dash, but couldn't find a way through and some slack marking let in Chesney to score again near the end with Shaun Truscott getting it.
14/08/2009     Boyzone    D 2-2 This marked the end of Carpeteers title challenge, mainly due to some crazy indiscipline from striker Gareth Geach. After initially putting the Carps 1 up, Geach let fly with a couple of dangerous slide tackles that the ref did not like and got out his blue card. Craig Phillips was next to face the sin bin, for some outspoken swearing at a ref that was already having an iffy game. No sooner had Craig got back on the pitch, Gareth Geach was dismissed for a wild kick on an opponent leaving Carps chances in tatters as Boyzone had already scored 2 goals to lead 2-1 while all the cards were being shown. Ricko Barker pulled out a bit of magic with 5 minutes remaining by firing in a long range shot out of nothing but from then on a draw was the best the Carps could hope for with only 5 men on the pitch.
07/08/2009           Poltair            Predators    W 4-1 This victory for Carpeteers sent Poltair Preds to the grave as the team finally disbanded. They have been a part of 6 a side since the start but a run of bad results and lack of first team players have led to their demise. However it was stand in man Paddy Crowle who put Preds 1 up tonight before Carps really got into gear. Gareth Geach equalised and then Craig Phillips hit a quick fire hat trick including one from the spot, to put him just 4 goals away from reaching the 100 mark for Carpeteers.
31/07/2009 Neil Truan Motors              W 2-0 Carpeteers enjoyed the mud and the grass as Cornwall 6 a side resurfaces its astro pitch for the next few weeks. Carps won this game early with a breakaway from a Neil Truan corner from Ricko who found Gareth Geach through the centre who blasted home a great goal. Craig Phillips followed that up with a coolly taken solo effort to put the oranges firmly in control. Jason Hoare made some special saves to deny Truan but everything held firm and Carps stay in 3rd place in the Premiership.
24/07/2009 Football Furions L 0-3 This was a massive clash between the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in the league. The first half was very close as defences worked hard to keep it at 0-0. Carpeteers knew they had to get the win here tonight and got caught on the break when on the attack and Furions took the lead. This led to Carpeteers pushing up field almost too far as Furions took advantage twice more on the counter to win the game by a very flattering score line although they deserved the win.
17/07/2009 City Boys W 3-0 City Boys have not been scoring many goals but have been tough to beat as most teams have found out due to their rough and dogged style of play. Carpeteers beat them tonight with some slick passing and overall better football. Craig Phillips notched another goal from defence to set the wheels rolling. After a host of missed chances, Carl Webster got his 2nd goal of the season to calm the Carps nerves, and Andy Geach ended a good move to make it 3-0 to keep Carpeteers in 2nd spot at the half way stage of the season. Gavin Kitts in goal had little to do all evening but CB goalie Ian 'Superman' Newcombe saved his team on more than one occasion.
10/07/2009 Puls8 Dbs W 3-1 Former team Dbs finished runners up in the Premiership 4 times without winning it and joined forces as one with twice Premiership winners Puls 8 for this season. This made them hot pre season favourites, but they are now in a real battle at the top with Chesney United and Carpeteers. Puls8 Dbs came flying at the Carps in the first 10 minutes which was expected in this game, but Carps defence absorbed the pressure well. Carps got into the game well as the game progressed and the first half ended goalless. It took a handball from the Puls8 Dbs goalie outside of his area for the game to open up. Craig Phillips slotted home the penalty and then got his second goal with what looked like a greedy run down the flank but became a great individual goal as he poked home into the corner just as it looked like the ball was running out of play. As expected, Puls 8  DBs came back and Damien Childs hit a reply with 5 minutes remaining. The game was now tense but was sealed when Ricko Barker picked up a loose ball in midfield and slid the ball into Gareth Geach who ran through to fire home with his RIGHT foot! Game over.
03/07/2009 Chenpump L 0-1 Carps were short on players for the first time ever with Webby, Gav Kitts, Hoops and Jason all out for this match. Connor Ridgement filled in at the back with Ricko and did a sound job, however Chenpump are solid in defence and never looked like conceding. Craig Phillips was stand in goalie for Carps and just as 0-0 looked likely, the ref blew for a penalty as Craig had handled [ debatable ] outside the area. Chenpump converted the penalty for a 1-0 victory.
03/07/2009 One Team W 3-1 Last seasons Premiership champions One Team are in free fall and could be relegated. They have just 1 win in 7 now and are bottom. Carps looked pretty much in control from minute one when Gareth Geach scored a rare header. Plenty of Carps pressure in the second half looked to kill the game off when Stevey Dash slotted home. However One Team grabbed a lifeline before Geach smashed home another goal to wrap it up.
12/06/2009        Boyzone W 6-2 After the mauling by Chesney it was vital that Carps bounced back 5 minutes later against a team that whipped them 3-0 in the cup a month ago. There was to be no repeat show for Boyzone here as Carps ran riot with Craig Phillips converting from the spot to set them on their way. Craig added a 2nd from a Gareth Geach throw in, Carl Webster grabbed his first goal of the season with a simple tap in and Gareth Geach netted before half time. Boyzone hit back soon after but Ricko restored the 4 goal advantage with a strong run down the wing to make it 5-1. Boyzone pulled another one back before the end and Andy Geach eventually scored his first goal of the season as for the first time ever, 5 different Carps players scored in a single game.
12/06/2009 Chesney Utd L 0-3 Carps got the upper hand last season over Chesney but Chesney were in fine form tonight to win by 3 goals which was not quite a true reflection of the overall play. After Jason Hoare had made a stunning stop after 2 minutes, Daniel Allen put Chesney in front with a header from the resulting corner. Chesney had few attempts on goal in the match but they took the ones they did create whereas Carpeteers missed all there's including hitting the post an incredible 3 times !!! and an in form Dan Osbourne in goal who quite literally kept Chesney in the game..
05/06/2009 Furions W 3-2 Carpeteers are going to have to grind their way to the title the hard way and certainly look up for the challenge after looking dead and buried against a quality packed Furions team featuring Danny Denning, Shane Kibell, Liam Nicholls and Neil Slateford. Craig Phillips slotted home the earliest of Carp goals as Furions were still trying to organise their squad but hit back almost instantly. A Gareth Geach shot came back off the upright as the half came to a close. Slateford then blasted home an unstoppable shot past stand in Carps keeper Ben Hemmingway as the 2nd half began. Incredibly though it was Gavin Kitts who levelled the scores when a Craig Phillips corner found Gavin lurking 15 yards out and he unleashed a beauty of a shot low into the bottom corner for his first goal in 44 matches !!!  Ben kept Carps in the game with a vital save 5 minutes from time but the move of the match was saved until last when Ricko and Gareth Geach tore up the field with a perfect 1 - 2 combination and Ricko fired home the winner to send Hoops and the on looking crowd into a wild frenzy.
29/05/2009 Neil Truan Motors W 3-2 Carps hadn't beaten Neil Truan in their last 3 encounters but looked something of their former excellent selves tonight with a top class comeback. Truan took the lead with a killer move that left all Carps players standing scratching their heads. However, orange heads did not drop and when Ricko volleyed home his first goal for 15 games hard into the bottom corner 5 minutes later, it was game on again. Half Time was 1-1 but from the restart Craig Phillips controlled an Andy Geach chip and slotted past the keeper in fine style. Gareth Geach broke free moments later and despite being flung into mid air from the Truan gk's challenge, made sure he poked the ball in to make it 3-1. Truan then fought back and the pressure was in tense for the final minutes. They were given a lifeline when gk Jason Hoare had a rush of blood to the head and passed straight to one of the Truan players for an easy tap in. However, all the Carpeteers deserved a hard earned win that sets them on their way for the forthcoming season.
22/05/2009 Poltair Predators D 2-2

NEW PREMIERSHIP SEASON BEGINS:  Andy Geach returned from injury tonight and seemed fine after the match but Hoops will be out for up to 6 months after collapsing before the match with the same knee problem he has been recovering from. Both these sides finished last season on 33 points and Preds won 1-0 and drew 1-1 in their games vs Carps last season. Carps came into this on the back of a shocking run of 3 straight defeats and had to try to find the form they ended last season with. Preds took the lead though when Jason Hoare handled outside his area in the opening moments and was sent off to the sin bin. When Jason returned and the second half began, Carps began to play better after a dominant Preds first half thanks to the skills and energy of Jack Walker. Craig Phillips slotted home an equaliser only for Preds to quickly regain the lead. A late Carps surge saw the scores level again as Ryan Lavery let a simple Craig Phillips shot through his finger tips and Ricko Barker and Gareth Geach also tested the keeper with moments left but couldn't find a way through. Equally Jason Hoare had to make a couple of fine saves to keep the final score at 2-2. This was better from Carpeteers and the old spark looks to be returning in what looks like a tough season.

15/05/2009 - SHIELD QF Londis L 0-1

Carpeteers crashed at the QF stage to lowly Londis by a goal to nil. A depleted Carps side missing Ricko, Andy Geach, Hoops and Dashy should still have had far too much for the team two divisions below them but in truth never looked like equalising after conceding a very early goal. Non existent marking from a throw in left the Londis striker with the simple task of a header on goal and Jason will be disappointed not to have kept it out having got a hand to the ball. Londis then looked to hit us on the break and fairly easily soaked up anything we had to throw at them and looked far more dangerous than we did on the break. Geachy had 2 wild efforts in the 2nd half and as desperation set in late doors, Craig and Webby forced last ditch defending. All in all a deserved win for Londis and Carpeteers have a serious amount of sorting out to do with the new Premiership season starting this Friday. © Hoops

08/05/2009 - CUP Gover L 0-1 Gover would probably start as 16/1 outsiders in this clash but incredibly, and with only 2 shots on goal in the whole cup game, they grabbed a shock winner against all the odds. Carpeteers passed Gover off the park from start to finish and between them, Gareth Geach and Craig Phillips hit the woodwork 6 TIMES !!! However, this was not to be Carpeteers night and will only qualify for the Shield. Things got worse when Andy Geach suffered a suspected fracture of the foot and looks set to miss the start of the new Premiership season on May 22nd.
08/05/2009 - CUP Boyzone L 0-3 Boyzone look a very handy outfit and wasted little time in destroying an out of sorts Carpeteers team. The Carps still looked in party mode after qualifying for the 5 a side South West qualifiers to Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday just gone. The match was already over by half time and the score could have been worse. Craig Phillips hit the post for Carps near the end but this was a little lesson from Boyzone.
01/05/2009 - CUP Jedi Mind Tricks W 1-0 Carpeteers never stepped into second gear in this 6th win in 7 games that saw a darting run and finish from Craig Phillips from a Gareth Geach throw in, good enough to win the game. Jedi did test returning goal keeper Jason Hoare but he saved well. The stats before the game however were stacked against Jedi Mind Tricks, as every team that has EVER played against Carpeteers containing Gareth Massey in their squad, has failed to beat the Carps in normal time. That run is now up to 7 matches.
24/04/2009 - CUP Burton W 3-1 Bottom league Burton came back strongly after initially going behind from 2 good goals from Craig Phillips. Some late Burton pressure saw the Carps having to defend a 2-1 lead before Gareth Geach ran past the whole team to fire in the winner. Geach was lucky not to be sent to the stands after a ruck with the gobby little ginger boy on Burtons team. It was the same little boy that got sent off for Green Army when we played them 2 seasons ago. Needs to learn some discipline. Despite the victory it was far from vintage Carpeteers.
17/04/2009 - FRIENDLY Jedi Mind Tricks W 3-0 New team Jedi Mind Tricks will be happy Charlie's Angels didn't turn up as judging on their poor showing in this friendly, Charlies would have run riot after just winning the Championship. The Carpeteers, playing awful themselves on the night had no problems as the Geach brothers grabbed the goals in a 3-0 win. The Jedi players, who've been hiding behind their keyboard and computer screens slating the Carps in recent weeks and months, had nowhere to hide tonight as Carpeteers did their talking on the pitch.
17/04/2009 - CUP Neil Truan Motors L 0-1 The CUP started tonight and all time history with Neil Truan has Carps winning 7/13 matches but they always seem to be our bogey team having now failed to beat them on the last 3 occasions. They were hungry for this as The Carps seemed sluggish after a month off. Their goal was scored when Gavin Kitts played a back pass to goalkeeper Craig Phillips slightly short and Truan nipped in to take advantage.
20/03/2009 Team Supreme W 3-0 This game was tougher than the first game vs Chesney Utd despite the score line showing otherwise. Team Supreme worked hard to halt the Carpeteers push for 3 goals or more to go top of the Premiership and it was a second half penalty converted by Craig Phillips that finally opened the scoring after a draw looked on the cards. Craig scored a great individual solo effort for number 2 and as Andy Geach and Ricko held the defence firm, Craig completed a majestic hat trick to send him ahead of Gareth Geach in the scoring charts this season [ Geach was seen smashing a drinks bottle in frustration and screaming very loudly on the touch line :p]  Gavin Kitts, who by now was really struggling in goal due to a nasty knock picked up earlier in the evening, saved 2 one on ones with Team Supreme strikers before the final whistle went to complete a hat trick of clean sheets for him and his defenders and end the season in style for the Carps with 10 games in a row unbeaten.
20/03/2009 Chesney Utd W 2-0 Steven Dash was given the boot by Chesney Utd  last season and he came back to haunt them in spectacular style tonight. With Carps top scorer Gareth Geach suspended, Dash got his chance to gain revenge and did so with 2 clinical finishes that sent Carpeteers to the summit of the Premiership, and put Chesney Utd out of this seasons title race. The tricky Kyle Friendship was Chesney's most dangerous player but even he couldn't find a way past the solid rock wall at the back of the Carps defence that was Ricko Barker and Craig Phillips. Carl Webster was unlucky to miss a great chance to make it 3 near the end and Gavin Kitts enjoyed another clean sheet between the sticks. Carps like to focus on playing football and try their best to do the talking on the pitch with results like this. And this was vintage Carpeteers.
13/03/2009 Gherkins W 5-0 It was 8 games ago that we last tasted defeat at 6 a side , and that in fact was versus Gherkins, when the team was still disrupted by the now departed Dan Osbourne. However some fantastic finishing from the Geach brothers set the record straight here tonight while Craig Phillips and Ricko in defence showed why Carpeteers have the best defence in the Premiership. Well done to Gavin Kitts who kept an excellent clean sheet in place for the absent Jason Hoare in goal. Andy Geach set Carps on their way and added another in the second half either side of his brother Gareths 2 strikes, the second of which to make it 5-0 was a beauty. Craig Phillips grabbed a goal for the team as Carl Webster continued to dominate the midfield area of the pitch. Dash replaced Ricko late on, who despite still suffering from a broken nose, had coped well. This good win puts us into 2nd place with 2 games to go.
06/03/2009 Neil Truan Motors D 2-2

A brilliant double strike from Geachy wasn’t enough to give Carpeteers a victory they so thoroughly deserved. Once again Carps found themselves depleted with Ricko, Andy and Jason all absent. A last minute emergency loan deal saw Niles Bakery Gk ‘Rich’ between the sticks and Dashy as loan striker. Hoops was manager for the night as concussion victim Ricko was stood down by the medics. The players did him proud as they fought tooth and nail for everything and once again had the ref who had cost us so badly earlier in the season. The ref hit new heights in bizarre one sided decisions as time after time things went against us. Skipper Craig and Geachy combined excellently early doors and Geachys deft first time flick flummoxed the Neil Truran keeper. Neil Truran hit back either side of half time to lead only for a stunning free kick from Geachy late on sealed a thoroughly deserved point. A performance to be proud of from everyone. © Hoops

27/02/2009

Poltair Predators

D 1-1

A vital match for both sides as only a win would really keep any of their title chances alive. Carps were without influential goalkeeper Jason Hoare and Gavin Kitts filled the void which left Carps with no choice but to play Craig Phillips and Ricko at the back. Preds took the lead through a fantastic move and shot. No debate there...superb goal. Carps got themselves back in the game from a cheeky Craig Phillips free kick on the edge of the area and from their the game was end to end with a draw being a fair result, although One Team on the sidelines were very pleased to see their rivals both lose ground yet again with only 4 games remaining of the season.
20/02/2009 Badgers W 3-0 Badgers held firm for a long time in this match but eventually succumbed to the power of the Carpeteers who never gave in. A second half penalty just into the second half was calmly put away by Craig Phillips and when Andy Geach finished off the move of the match Badgers were finished. Craig slotted home another by the end as Ricko went on a buccaneering run through the midfield and Gavin Kitts had fun roughing up the Badgers attackers who couldn't convert, leading to Jason Hoare keeping yet another clean sheet and only 2 goals conceded in 5 games. He has filled the void left by Ozzie with relative ease now despite a shaky first game. As Carpeteers kept on the push for the title tonight, Badgers suffered their 11th defeat in 13 games and must surely now think about an end of season clear out of their weaker players, such as perhaps Gareth Massey, who has all but dragged them to certain relegation this season. Good luck to them.
06/02/2009 Furions W 3-1 Craig Phillips and Ricko had to hold the line att he back as regular defenders Gavin Kitts and Andy Geach were missing. Ricko brought in Chesney Utd reject Steven Dash to start up front for the first time to play alongside Gareth Geach. Things got off to a flyer as Geach linked up with Dash and Dash poked home an early cross for his first ever Carps goal. Gareth Geach smashed in a free kick moments later to leave Furions in disarray. Slugger Sleeman hit an unstoppable reply just before half time but Furions couldn't get close to the Carps goal as everyone dug in behind the ball and knowing that defeat would certainly end the chase for the title. Time was running out as Furions went for broke and got a man sent off as the frustration began to show. With 3 minutes left a surging run from Ricko from the back saw him go the whole distance of the pitch to score the Carps 3rd and to complete a massive win. Jason has settled in well in goal now having only conceded 2 goals in 4 games. Awesome stuff from every single one of the Carps tonight.
31/01/2009 DB's D 1-1 For only the second time ever, we drew 2 games in succession and missed a great chance to keep the title alive. The game was covered in controversy. The referee as usual had a shocker and after DB's had taken the lead against the run of play in the first half, failed to spot that the ball had gone 2 foot out of play for a throw in. Gareth Geach took advantage and scored which was some justice for the goal we were not given in the Neil Truan match [ see 12/12/2008 ] . Carps set up camp in DB's half for the remainder of the game with Ricko guilty of the worst miss of the season from 6 yards out and Craig Phillips finding the net, only to have it ruled out for a foul....on a Carps player !!! where's the "play the advantage gone " ref ? Even the heifer fans that DB's brought along were shocked at these decisions. Jason had no saves to make in the Carps goal in the second half but with One Team surprisingly beating Poltair Preds, the title is still not 100% gone.
23/01/2009 One Team D 0-0 One team have only lost 2 games out of 10 this season and are the surprise packages by far. We beat them 1-0 earlier on this season but they have been tough to stop since then. Tonight it was a battle of the defences as we both held firm. In our new orange kit for the first time [ and looking fairly smart it must be said ;) ] we didn't play our best and it was a good save or two near the end from Jason Hoare that gave us a point. Ross Pinhammer looked good for One Team. The title is looking difficult to win now but is still in our own hands if we can defeat DB's and Poltair Preds.
02/01/2009 Chesney Utd W 1-0 A Carpeteers win was crucial if the title was still a distinct possibility come the end of the season and there was no need to fire anyone up as the Carps squad included 2 ex Chesney players and a chance to meet ex gk Ozzie who is now at Chesney. In fact the score line totally flattered Chesney as this game should have been 5 or 6 nil by the end as Carpeteers completely dominated from start to finish. Chesney's movement was good but the Carps were up for this and everyone looked hungry to win [ even a flu ridden Ricko ] . Craig Phillips got the goal and held the fort at the back with Andy Geach brilliantly for the whole game while Gareth Geach will be kicking himself for missing several easy chances but had a good game none the less. This was a vital win and it must be said Jason kept a great Carpeteers clean sheet in goal as well. JASON=7 ANDY=9 CRAIG=9 WEBBY=8 RICKO=6 DASHY=7 GARETH=7 HOOPS=6
19/12/2008 Gherkins L 2-3 Carpeteers paid the price for some slack marking early on in the game as bottom of the table Gherkins pulled off a shock win leaving Carpeteers Premiership title hopes in tatters. Gherkins grabbed 2 early goals and looked to have finished the game when they converted an early 2nd half penalty. New goalkeeper Jason must have been wondering what had hit him but for the last 15 minutes he barely touched the ball as Carpeteers showed their desire to win. After a string of great chances and unbelievable saves from the Gherkins keeper, Gareth Geach pulled one back. Moments later Carl Webster got his first goal of the season as he prodded the ball home from 6 yards. Ricko and Geach fired shot after shot at the keeper but he wouldn't budge and Gherkins held out for a good win despite a late fracas which saw Mike Haley and Gareth Geach sent to the stands for punching each other.
12/12/2008 Neil Truan Motors L 1-2 This was our first back to back defeats in 84 matches !!! since 13th July 2007, 17months ago. It was a last minute goal that ended the run as well. In conditions nothing short of hurricane like, anyone could have won this as it was impossible to play proper football. However our run of pathetic no balls referees continues. Truan's opening goal was inside the area when struck and a Craig Phillips corner found its way in over the line by what must have been at least an arms length and with the Truan keeper smashing the ball out of the pitch in disgust at letting in the goal the ref gave a THROW IN !!!! ABSOLUTLEY TERRIBLE DECISION !!! Craig Phillips got the equaliser shortly after but Truan stole it at the death which also put paid to Dan ' Ozzie ' Osbourne's career with the Carpeteers.
05/12/2008 Poltair Predators L 0-1 This top of the table clash was a real battle and the tension was in the air for the whole game. Neither team edged it as a draw looked the likely outcome with defences on top. As the game wore on Preds began to lose their discipline and some tasty challenges went unpunished by the referee who quite frankly must be getting paid not to produce blue cards as at least one should have been shown to Preds. Preds took the honours when a quickly taken free kick was slotted home by Anthony Stone. However protests ensued as everyone of the Carps players believed the free kick should have gone to the Carpeteers but was awarded the wrong way. The ref was banned from reffing the Carpeteers matches ever again after the final whistle [ quite rightly ] and Poltair Preds moved 4 points clear of us at the top of the table with a third of the season played.
05/12/2008 Badgers W 6-1 This was a routine victory for us and was made even easier once Badgers had brought in second string players like Gareth Massey. Ricko quickly got the ball rolling by smashing a shot into the top corner and it was game over by half time as Gareth Geach and Craig Phillips ran riot. Craig knocked in another hat trick while Geach scored 2. Andy Geach was unlucky to hit the post 2nd half while Badgers got a consolation goal from a free kick with 2 minutes left which was the first goal we have conceded in 8 games !!! the last one was against Bagders in the cup on 17th October.
21/11/2008 DB's D 0-0 The biggest title rivals of them all, DB's have been runners up for the past 4 seasons and feel that this year is there's. We lost both games to them last year so to avoid defeat would be an improvement. It was tight stuff and very rough as both Craig, Gareth Geach and Ricko felt the force of the DB's and DB's were lucky to end the game with all men still on the field. Carps had chances to sneak it and so did DB's but a draw was a fair result which puts both sides in the top 3. Poltair Preds jumped to the top of the table after 4 matches but will face stronger tests ahead while this was the Carpeteers 7th clean sheet in a row.
14/11/2008 Football Furians W 2-0 Football Furians are title contenders and this was another great win for us. It was end to end stuff and the brilliant Ozzie did some sterling work in the carps goal to keep the score level. The Carps class eventually shone through with a top corner finish from Craig Phillips and Gareth Geach settled the game.
07/11/2008 Team Supreme D 0-0 New Premier League boys Team Supreme were there for the taking but with Ricko only about 75% fit on his return to the action and Craig Phillips missing through injury along with Andy Geach it was always going to be close. Steve Dash stood in for the absent players and did a great job in midfield. The older players from Team Supreme lacked huge discipline and should have been red carded instead of the blue cards they received and Carpeteers nearly stole the game when Ricko's 25 yard drive smashed against the crossbar.
31/10/2008 One Team W 1-0 1st game of the NEW PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON. One Team COULD BE way out of  their depth in this league unless they sign 1 or 2 new players as they were promoted by default from the Championship after finishing 3rd and should have taken advantage of a Carpeteers team hit by injuries and sickness. Gav Kitts played with a throat infection, Craig Phillips hobbled around for the whole game with a dead leg, Carl Webster was still recovering from a week long drinking session and Ricko was still out for the 10th game running with a niggling hamstring problem. The Geach brothers were the key in this game and Gareth Geach in particular looked like scoring all night and grabbed the goal in the second period on his ever improving trusty right boot. Woeful stuff but job done.
24/10/2008-SHIELD FINAL Chenpump D 0-0 [L0-1 pens] Chenpump have just been relegated to the Championship but knocked out Premier League runners up DB's in the QF and went on to hold us in this game 0-0. The final was tight and neither team looked like taking control. Penalties was to decide the Shield and what a farce it turned out to be. Sudden Death penalties from the outset is a dam right disgrace for both teams concerned. Craig Phillips stepped up first for us and had his pen saved. Chenpump now only had to score past the masterful Ozzie to win the Shield...and did so. That was it. 3 matches of hard work all to lose by one stupid kick. Sort the rules out please so this doesn't happen to any teams again. On a positive note...we saw how well we played against the better teams in this comp and the title push is really on for the coming season. Ricko is also to come back to the team after missing the whole cup with a hamstring injury.
24/10/2008-SHIELD SF Poltair Predators W 1-0 Our semis record is nothing short of abysmal. 5 semis and 5 defeats and it was on our minds from the start but we settled down and Craig [ against his former club ] kept the backline safe with Gav Kitts, and it was Gareth Geach again who had the last laugh when he managed to sprint onto a loose ball behind the Preds defence and poking the ball past the keeper at the final moment. And that was enough to see us into our first final ever with Hoops running across the pitch going wild.
24/10/2008-SHIELD QF Neil Truan Motors W 2-0 Neil Truan had missed out on the main cup as well and would consider themselves possible Premiership contenders next season but tonight they were blown away by the two best strikers in the league. Craig Phillips hit home a beauty of a finish within 2 minutes from a tight angle to send the fans mad before some quick thinking from a corner saw Ozzie throw the ball beyond the Truan defence for Gareth Geach to chase down, round the keeper and nod the ball in with his head. That was his first headed goal at Cornwall 6 aside and we were into the semis....again.
17/10/2008-CUP Badgers D 1-1 Only a win would do to make the top 2 but it was nervous stuff again from us and only a late late header from Craig Phillips rescued a point as we nearly imploded and threw it all away. With this result we qualified for the shield - Level 2 of the 4 cups.
17/10/2008-CUP Mountcharles W 2-1 Carl Webster and then Craig Phillips eased the nerves with the winning goals after Mountcharles had taken a shock lead. Mr Webster is always happy to score against his Saturday 11 a side league boys.
17/10/2008-CUP Gherkins D 0-0 A win against Gherkins would put us through to the Cup comp proper but a shaky display from us left the group firmly in the balance and Gherkins at the top by a point.
10/10/2008-CUP Charlie's Angels W 1-0 Charlie's Angels had been promoted from the bottom league into the Championship last season and so Carps were in for a real tough test again. Andy Geach had to be alert at the back and did a much better job in this match but it was all Charlie's Angels until Craig Phillips popped up with an important goal for the Carps after a well worked team move. The guys rode the Charlie's Angels storm and the win keeps us in 2nd place. We'll just about take that tonight.
10/10/2008-CUP Average Joes L 0-1 A shocking display by the Carps boys as Average Joes from the bottom division went all out for a smash and grab raid and Paddy Crowle rocketed home a last minute winner that had been coming for the whole game. The carps looked to be sluggish and had too many men forward for too long leaving acres of room at the back for the Joes to steal the game. A game to forget and even more so as Gareth Geach limped off to the sidelines to sit with the injured Ricko and assistant Hoops.
03/10/2008-CUP Hotshots W 1-0 Hotshots provided a much tougher test than Estudiantes in the second cup game. They finished bottom of the third division in the season just gone but they defended with all they had and with more composure in front of goal they could have taken a point which they might well have deserved. Hoops started his first game for Carpeteers and got into the action while Craig Phillips played only half the game due to injury. Gareth Geach hit in the winner after breaking through the Hotshots back line. 2 group games and maximum points so far. Good start.
03/10/2008-CUP Estudiantes W 1-0 First cup game was versus Estudiantes who's team didn't all turn up LOL and were trying to pinch the Carpeteers players before kick off LOL. FINAL RESULT : 1-0 to Carpeteers. Goal scored by the captain Ricko Barker LOL. Straightforward win and Carpeteers had 3 regular first team players missing LOL.
26/09/2008 Love Bunnies W 6-1 With Roses taking the Premier League title with a win over Db's tonight, Carps celebrated their 3rd place in the Premier League in fine style. A straightforward victory over Love Bunnies followed. Craig Phillips went between the sticks to allow Ozzie a chance to get his first Carps goal and to see if Gareth Geach could get the 4 goals he needed to be this seasons Carps top scorer. Ozzie incredibly opened the scoring and was congratulated by all his team mates on his first ever Carpeteers goal. Bunnies levelled soon after but then fell apart as Gareth Geach whacked home 2 shots to kill the tie. Gareth went gung-ho in his attempt to equal Craig's 17 goals this season with shots disappearing high into the night sky and out of the stadium before finally smashing home his hat trick goal to put him level with Craig. When sweeper Ricko intercepted a Bunnies corner, he ran the length of the pitch to fire home his 2nd goal in 2 games. By now the game was totally stretched and Hoops replaced the hard working Ozzie and did a good job at the back for the remaining 5 minutes. Andy Geach must be the unluckiest striker in 6 a side as his near misses have left him short of confidence even though his assists have been top notch. He finally managed to take his chance with time nearly over and end his goal drought. In the Carps goal, top marks to Craig Phillips who did a solid job all night, despite the best efforts from female fans to try and distract him. A great win to end off a good season.
19/09/2008 Roses L 2-4 Top of the table Roses had their best team out in this game as they looked to wrap up the Premiership title. However, it was first blood to Carpeteers as Ricko smashed in his first goal of the season after 16 games with his first touch wearing his brand spanking new golden boots. The lead didn't last long as Roses got back into the game and pushed on in the second half as Carps missed Gav at the back. It was 4-1 to Roses with 5 minutes to play, their incredible pacey front man Adam Bromley even leaving Ricko in his tracks. Craig Phillips got a beauty of a consolation when he scored from a corner and Gareth Geach was lucky to remain on the field as tempers flared and arms were raised.
12/09/2008 Chenpump W 2-0 After the win over Badgers it was straight over to Pitch 1 to face last seasons champions Chenpump. Chenpump were fresh and gave Carps the run around but Craig Phillips knocked in a Ricko cross just before half time against the run of play. Chenpump came out 2nd half with force again and found Ozzie in the Carps goal in fine form. Carps kept fighting for every ball and man of the match Carl Webster got a great team goal with Craig for support to finish a hard working Chenpump off. Carl hit the bar late on and Andy Geach [ who somehow didnt score tonight! ] had a goal disallowed after he shot into the net just as the full time whistle blew. Very unlucky. These 2 wins tonight all but guarantee a 3rd place finish for Carpeteers in their debut Premiership season.
12/09/2008 Badgers W 4-0 Badger's cleared out some of their weaker players at the start of this season, [ones that couldn't cope with Premiership football] and they have done much better since, mixing it in the top 5 for most of the season. Tonight though, Carps were on blistering form and Craig Phillips scored 4 goals in great style to show that Carpeteers do their talking on the pitch.
05/09/2008 DB's L 0-3 You shouldn't be afraid of any team at Cornwall 6 a side but the Carpeteers lads are realising that the DB's are probably the best team up there. Crisis talks were held after a 2-4 defeat earlier in the season with some members of the squad siting too many Carps subs to blame for the defeat. But it was clear to see tonight that that is not an excuse at all and Db's slowly but surely killed Carpeteers, who struggled to make any impact on the oppositions goal.
22/08/2008 Football Furians D 3-3 Football Furians came out fighting after a first half where Carps were well in control and Craig Phillips had grabbed a goal. Furians neat passing left an unfit looking Carps team in disarray and the game changed as some awesome shooting from Danny Denning and Martin Slugger Sleeman left Ozzie grasping for thin air. It looked all over until Gareth Geach somehow managed to poke home a loose ball 1 minute from time and then in a moment of madness, the Furians keeper [ who had already had several warnings ] handled the ball outside his area when throwing the ball out. He was then sent off for dissent and Craig Phillips smashed home the injury time penalty to salvage a point. At the other end, some of Ozzie's saves had proven vital but at the same time, it was a reality wake up call to many members of the squad that this is still the Premiership and we're not the best yet.
15/08/2008 Neil Truan Motors W 2-0 Carpeteers are a changed team and are now going into matches full of confidence. Tonight's game vs Neil Truan was a revenge mission after an easy mauling earlier in the season. Carps new found form though was good enough to virtually stroll to a 2-0 win. Gavin Kitts smashed home a long range effort into the bottom corner for his first goal since his first ever match for us over 3 seasons ago. Gareth Geach wrapped things up in the second half as Neil Truan struggled to find any breaks through the strong Carps back line. 4 wins in a row now and 4 clean sheets.
08/08/2008 Tesco W 2-0 Suddenly, after struggling to adjust, Carpeteers are beginning to find their feet in the Premiership. 3 wins in a row has taken them from relegation form to possible outsiders for the title. Their are 1 or 2 good results needed before the title chase becomes alive though but after breaking down a gritty Tesco team tonight and with confidence back in the team, the belief is high. And how ironic is it that since goalkeeper Ozzie turned down several struggling bottom division teams for his signature, he's kept 3 clean sheets! What a story ! Andy Geach put Carps into the lead with a great finish and Carl Webby Webster got his 2nd in as many games to finally beat Tesco who hung on in there for the whole game. They always defend well. Jimmy continues to miss the action with a niggling back injury but Ricko returns to the defence next week to replace the missing Andy Geach. Neil Truan will be the opponents.
01/08/2008 Poltair Preds W 3-0 After last weeks thrashing of Pulse 8 along came the Preds who we had beaten 4-0 in our opening Premiership match this season. They struggled to break through the carps defence as yet again the wall of Gavin Kitts, Ricko Barker and tonight's captain Craig Phillips blocked them off just like Pulse 8 last week. Craig fired home the opener against his former team and Gareth Geach blasted home a straight forward second goal that seemed to put the game beyond doubt as early as half time. Preds though did have a spell of pressure during the second half but Ozzie was rarely tested in the Carps goal and a breakaway Carps attack near the end gave Carl Webster his first goal of the season despite a massive deflection. Nothing he deserved more though after the last 2 games and hard earned victories. A win vs Tesco next week could see Carpeteers matching strides with the divisions top 2, with the title now suddenly back in the their sights.
25/07/2008 Pulse8 W 6-0 With G.keeper Ozzie signing a new contract before the game amid rumours he was jumping ship to a poor division 1 team, Carpeteers responded and played like their lives depended on winning this game. Pulse 8 were the goal machines of the division but despite early pressure, Gav Kitts and Ricko held them at bay. The game belonged to Gareth Geach however, who tore the P8 defence to shreds with pace that would give the Olympic 100m sprinters a run for their money. His 4 goals destroyed them but he was provided with service which had been lacking all season. Craig Phillips dropped into a defensive midfield role and along with Gav and Ricko completely stopped P8 in their tracks. As tempers flared, Puls8 had 2 men sent off for nasty fouls and dissent and their game fell apart. Gav Kitts was carried off after receiving a nasty elbow to the head which nearly knocked him out. Carl Webster had his best game of the season in midfield winning nearly every ball. Aaron Crocker replaced Gavin in defence after his departure and scored a wonder goal on his off chance debut, firing in the pull back from a corner. Well done. Hoops also got into the action after a Craig Phillips penalty sealed the game up good and proper and Hoops had a searing run down the right turning the defence inside out as they couldn't cope with his amazing ball control and skill, but was tackled by the keeper as he tried to stab home into the bottom corner. Very unlucky. Carpeteers are back.
18/07/2008 Badgers L 1-3 Carpeteers suffered their 5th straight game without a win and also went 2-0 down for the 5th successive game as well. A bent referee didn't help matters when a perfectly good penalty decision was turned away despite incredible angry protests from Carl Webster. Gareth Geach headed in a goal from the edge of the area but after about 5 seconds lapsing after the goal the ref changed his mind and cancelled the goal even though he was on the half way line and only because of some hopeful Badger protests. Take nothing away from Badgers though who with James Avery amongst their ranks looked quite solid despite some rough looking tackles that the referee gave only free kicks for when he should have been dishing out blue cards. Poor. Badgers looked a much better team without weak striker Gareth Massey who seems to struggle at this level and who has dropped back to the bottom league. Badgers couldn't win this fixture last season with him but without him could be title contenders on this form. Craig Phillips was the man on goal form for Carpeteers tonight.
11/07/2008 The Roses D 2-2 The Roses are the best team at Cornwall 6 aside and have won the Premiership on more than one occasion. They led the table by 6 points going into tonight's game and again Carps started slowly going two nil down after only 5 minutes mainly to deflections which was annoying. The Roses didn't seem so sharp as the game went on and Gareth Geach snatched the goals that gave us a vital point. Roses were lucky they didn't lose this game as they held on under pressure near the end. Carps have now gone 4 games without a win. This is the Premiership.
4/07/2008 DBs L 2-4 DBs have been runners up in the Premiership for the last 2 seasons and some of the Carps underestimated them tonight. Going two goals down didn't help matters and when we finally picked the pace up a goal was scored by Craig Phillips to put us back in the game. DBs were fast going forward and put the game beyond doubt after half time with 2 more goals. Gareth Geach came off the bench to fire in a free kick and a missed chance near the end nearly made it 4-3.
27/06/2008 Chenpump D 3-3 Life up with the big boys is tough. 2 wins in the last 6 games shows this but tonight should have ended in disaster for Carps as Premiership titles holders Chenpump got the better of the exchanges and breezed into a 3-0 lead deep into the second half. Carpeteers never give in though and Craig Phillips snatched what everyone thought was a consolation with only 7 minutes left on the refs stopwatch. But when Gareth Geach poked the ball past an out of sorts Chenpump goalkeeper it was suddenly game on. With only moments left Craig Phillips scored a quite sensational equaliser that sent a wave of delightful cheers across Cornwall 6 a side in earthquake like fashion. Assistant manager Hoops, who did a great job on the touchline all evening and suffering a migraine attack, was suddenly seen flinging his arms around anyone in sight and charging up the by-line like an out of control elephant to celebrate a quite incredible full time draw that looked totally out of the question going into the remaining minutes of the game. YES!
20/06/2008 Neil Truan Motors L 1-3 This was our first league defeat since a 1-0 loss to Premier Printers on October 12th 2007. Neil Truan finished 2nd to us in the Championship last season and didn't win either games last season but were out for revenge here tonight. It could have gone either way for a long time as the first half ended 0-0 but defences were definitely on top. A defence mix up at the back gave Neil Truan the lead and slack marking late on let them in again. Carps were struggling to make an impact up front until a brilliant Gareth Geach run looked to have turned the tide. Carpeteers looked tired as the clock ran down and Neil Truan pinched another to finish the game. They looked more hungry for victory on the night.
13/06/2008 Football Furians W 2-1 Craig Phillips smashed home his 50th Carps goal in the second half to put Carpeteers back on track after falling a goal down to the Furians. Furians didn't seem so fired up as when they beat us just 6 games ago in the cup and despite taking the lead when Shane Kibell scored from what seemed like an impossible angle, the Furians never threatened that much. Craigs great effort after half time brought the scores level and Andy Geach got his first Premier League goal with a superb finish mid way through the second period. Jim Martyn produced the performance of his life in a game that saw Gareth Geach hobble off worryingly with a possible return of his ankle problem that kept him out for nearly 4 months earlier this year, and Andy also had to have treatment for a knock at the side of the pitch. Carps though, remain unbeaten after 3 games and are in 2nd in the table. A Pleasing start.
6/06/2008 Tesco D 0-0 The last time the Carpeteers failed to score in a league match was 23 games ago in a 0-1 defeat to Premier Printers [ it was also the last time us Carps had lost a league game ] . Tesco will be more than happy to have earned a draw here after a wave of Carpeteers possession and attacks. To be fair to Tesco, their defence was the first in a long time to keep Gareth Geach and Craig Phillips quiet [ no easy thing to do ]. The Carps defence looked good despite Jim's absence tonight and Tesco only really threatened Ozzie's goal when Chris Kellow clipped the outside of the post just 5 minutes from time. Carpeteers will see this as 2 points lost though but it is still a promising start to the Premiership campaign after 2 undefeated games.
30/05/2008 Poltair Predators W 4-0 This was the Carpeteers first ever Premiership match and although the Preds had 2 or 3 of their regular players missing, they drafted in one or two handy replacements. 0-0 at half time but Craig Phillips, who tonight captained the Carps for the first time since he left Poltair Preds last season, scored virtually from the kick off, and revealed a t shirt with the words 'Carps for Life' written on it in huge letters. He then exacted more revenge on the club that forced him out with a perfect penalty into the top corner after the Preds defender stepped into his own area. With the young gobby strikers now moaning at everything that went against them it was only a matter of time before it went to 3-0, and when Gareth Geach rounded a stranded keeper half way up the pitch with a back heel and tapped home, Josh Bragg was sent off for constant whinging to the ref with a loud applause from some of the watching crowd. A great decision as players such as Martin Sleeman carried on to fight the cause for Preds with a much better attitude. Gareth Geach made it 4 with a good strike at the end that saw Hoops make his Premier League debut. He didnt touch the ball but he made his presence felt as he got in the way of a couple of fierce Preds shots. Gavin Kitts, Jimmy and Ricko marked the Preds attackers out of the game and Ozzie did his job well in goal as usual making a couple of good stops. Carl Webster also worked his socks off in the midfield all evening and no guessing as to who walked away with the biggest smile of all.....that had to be.....Mr Craig Phillips :)
23/05/2008 - CUP SF Chenpump L 0-1 Carpeteers had never been past this stage of any cup and they couldn't have met tougher opponents in Premiership champions Chenpump. It was Premiership Champions vs Championship Champions and it was a very hotly contested event. Both teams worked like fury to grab the winner but chances were few and far between as defences dominated. It was Chenpump that took the lead though when a deflection of Gav Kitts' leg beat Ozzie at the far post. Carps hit back and Ricko's shot scraped the outside of the post with just a minute left on the clock but it was too late. Chenpump went on to win the Cup Final 6-5 on penalties but these 2 teams should have a great battle in next seasons Premier League.
23/05/2008 - CUP QF DBs W 1-0 It was a difficult quarter final as DBs were the last seasons premiership runners up. It was only 15 minutes one way and in a tight game with few chances, penalties beckoned. But with 5 minutes remaining Craig Phillips smashed a free kick into the bottom corner to seal the Carpeteers 4th semi final appearance in the cup in a row.
16/05/2008 - CUP TC Saints W 4-1 3rd division opponents could not be taken lightly in a game we had to win to qualify for the final 8 of the cup. With only Hoops on the bench due to Ricko being away and Gavin Kitts ill, the Carps had the bare minimum squad. 0-0 at ht was a worrying score line and from the kick off TC Saints took the lead to leave Carps staring at a shock defeat for the 2nd game running. However back they came with true grit as Gareth Geach smashed home a hat trick in fine style, and Craig Phillips converted a penalty that saw all 4 goals go in, in the final 5 minutes. Webby departed for Hoops with 2 minutes remaining. This result left us 2nd in the group behind Football Furians who play Badgers in the QF. Carpeteers will play Premiership runners up...DB's.
9/05/2008 - CUP Football Furians L 1-2 Furians were 4th in the prem last season and the likes of Danny Denning and Sam Pritchard are some of the great players amongst their ranks. When Furians stole the lead in the first half, Carps looked tired and void of ideas and the non losing streak looked to be in danger. A hopeful ball through the middle a few minutes later from Webby saw Craig Phillips poke home the equaliser for Carps and it was game on again. Furians controlled the game in the second period and deservedly snatched the lead again . Carps still struggled to create anything and were lucky not to go 1-3 down as Ozzie tipped a shot onto a post. Craig Phillips had the games best chance of the match from 5 yards out in injury time but the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the goal. It was the Carpeteers first defeat in open play since 12th October 2007 to Premier Printers and ended a run of 32 games without a loss.
9/05/2008 - CUP Londis Apprentice W 1-0 Londis have just taken the division 1 title which we won last season and it was always going top be a difficult game. They have just signed Nathan Ball who looked very dangerous tonight and Carps struggled for much of the game to get a foot hold. It took a bit of magic and a rare 20 yard drive into the bottom corner from the long serving Carl Webster to break the deadlock to keep Carps 100% record in the group going strong.
2/05/2008 - CUP Mountcharles W 2-1 Mountcharles are ex Premiership winners now reformed and they were determined to make us work hard for the points. Again we shaded the overall game, Andy Geach scoring his first ever cup goal to give us the lead. A second half rocket from Ricko found the top corner and ended his 15 ! game goal drought. Mountcharles got a goal back and should have levelled the scores but for some amazing saves from Ozzie in the Carps goal. This keeper is just first class. 2 wins from 2 in the group with 3 games to play. Healthy start.
2/05/2008 - CUP Tesco W 2-0 In the first of 2 cup matches tonight, we came up against old rivals Tesco who we shall be battling with in the Premiership next season. They gave us a good game as usual but with an improved side these days with new players, Carps came through this test looking very strong indeed. Great to see Gareth Geach back among the goals and he got both tonight to get us off to a flyer in the cup.
25/04/2008 The Badger's D 2-2 Carpeteers went the whole season unbeaten after a tough draw against a well up for it Badgers team on this end of season night. In fact both teams had the chances to win it but a draw was about fair. Badgers took the lead twice. Craig Phillips poked home the equaliser first time while Andy Geach smashed home the 2nd leveller. Ricko went close with a 25 yard drive that was only just tipped over and Ozzie had to be up to the task in the Carps goal as the excellent Scott Ansell made plenty of chances. A very solid display at the back for Badgers from James Avery prevented Gareth Geach a goal on his return after a near 3 month lay off. Badgers were however, favourites for the title at the start of the campaign but Carpeteers ran away with the title in great fashion winning the league by 9 points and beating Badgers by a comfortable 12 in the end. A brilliant champagne and trophy presentation followed this game with Hoops doing the honours with the bottle of bubbly [ something poor old Gareth Massey will have to continue dreaming of for at least another season ] and now the Carps must try and finally get their name on the cup before having a crack at completing the unbelievable hat trick by trying to win the Premiership that starts in June 2008. Thanks to Bear Barker for filming...DVD of the game is now available...email or text me...
18/04/2008 Gherkins W 4-0 Party time for the Carpeteers as they never really got out of top gear to beat a Gherkins team needing to win to keep their promotion hopes alive. Andy Geach opened the scoring early in the opening period with Carl Webster making it 2 before Craig Phillips extended his lead at the top of the Championship scoring charts just before half time. The wind picked up and made it a messy game in the second half but Andy Geach made the game safe after a great run and set up from Jim Martyn. Gavin Kitts kept a clean sheet first half as Ozzie had a rare run out for Carps and nearly grabbed a shock goal but for just slicing his shot inches wide of the post. With Neil Truan only drawing tonight, Carpeteers went 11 points clear with one game left next week.
11/04/2008 Green Army W 3-1 We had to win to be champions after Neil Truan had lost earlier in the night and we faced the bottom side, Green Army. After wave upon wave of attacks the ball would go anywhere but the goal and Green Army held on for dear life. However the banana skin was placed onto the pitch just before half time as somehow Green Army took the lead after a sharp breakaway that turned out to be their only attack of the half. With the wind behind the Carps in the 2nd half, it took a clear cut penalty decision to get us back into the game. Craig Phillps levelled the scores and then volleyed home Webby's cross to put the champagne on ice. Plenty of chances went begging from every Carps player as they pushed for a 3rd goal. At times [ even without the absent Jim ] the carps defended in huge numbers to protect Ozzie who again had very little to do during the evening. Carl Webster grabbed the glory goal to win us the title still with time on the clock. Green Army then resulted to dirty fouls and quite rightly had a man sent off. The dirtiest team in Cornwall 6 a side without doubt. CARPETEERS CHAMPIONS !!!
4/04/2008 Gover W 9-0 Even without the injured Gav Kitts and Gareth Geach, Carpeteers recorded a record win as Craig Phillips smashed 5 past a helpless Gover including one from a corner. It was one way traffic from the off and only defenders Rick and Jim failed to get on the score sheet. Andrew Geach grabbed another brace while Carl Webster should have had a hat trick but had to settle for a single goal. Super sub Neil ' Hoops ' Slaughter entered the fray with 5 mins remaining and scored his first ever outfield goal since his arrival on Earth 'nearly' 40 years ago. Rick and Jim had huge games at the back restricting Ozzie to having to make only one save all game. As other results came through it was announced that Carpeteers were promoted and would be playing Premiership football next season. Well done everyone !
29/03/2008 One Team W 2-0 One Team drafted in as many Premiership stars as they could to try and ruffle the table topping Carpeteers and were very lively in the opening minutes as they exposed a tired looking Carps defence and the woodwork came to the rescue of Ozzie in goal. As Jim and Ricko steadied the ship at the back, Andy Geach and Webby had to sit much deeper than they would have liked and the game was a bit of a stalemate for a long time. Eventually a bit of Craig Phillips magic during the second half produced the goal we needed. Martyn James, covering for the absent Kitts tonight got a Craig shot full on in the face during the second half and had to watch the rest of the game from the bench. When Craig grabbed his second of the game One Team's heads dropped and Ozzie had surprising little to do in goal as the superb Jim mopped up any dangerous pieces with Rick and Webby for cover. The last few minutes resulted in some dirty One Team tackles when they knew they were broken and Ozzie was lucky to get out of the game without serious injury after a nasty collision left his goalkeeping trousers literally in shreds. This victory puts us 6 points clear with only 4 games left.
29/03/2008 Neil Truan Motors D 1-1 The top of the table clash lived up to its name and was as tense as was predicted. Gareth Geach and Gav Kitts were missing for Carps tonight. Carps got the upper hand earlier in the season with a 1-0 win and it was them that applied the early pressure until a Truan breakaway just before half time resulted in them scoring a great goal, albeit against the run of play. However there was still time to reply in the half and Craig Phillips slotted home a super goal to take him to the top of the all time Carpeteers goals list with 33. The second half was a real battle and the game was delicately poised throughout. Carpeteers missed a chance to snatch it at the death as Craig's 1 on 1 with the keeper was blocked and Ricko smashed the rebound agonisingly wide in his first appearance in 7 weeks after recovering from a nasty thigh tear. This result left Truan 3 points adrift of Carpeteers who still have a game in hand...that was later against One Team [ above ]
07/03/2008 Kernow W 7-0 This set a new club record of 8 straight wins and produced a string of new stats and interesting talking points. Andrew Geach banged in a hat trick from midfield to show his importance to the team at present. Craig Phillips became the all time leading Carps scorer on 32 goals with Gareth Geach, and Carl Webster is now the 3rd all time scorer for Carps after his brace. This win was as easy as they come. Carps were 2 up in 2 minutes and Kernow never really troubled Ozzie apart from one good effort. Gav Kitts and Jim did their solid job at the back before the introduction of Hoops with 7 minutes remaining. Hoops fell over with his first touch of the ball and subsequently broke his arm in the process. This injury puts him on the sidelines for the rest of the season along with Gareth Geach and possibly Ricko.
29/02/2008 One Team W 4-2 In quite possibly the worst conditions ever seen at Cornwall 6 a side a gritty Carpeteers team bounced back to win 4-2 after being behind on 2 occasions. The main man tonight was Craig Phillips who smashed home a hat trick in amazing style; some really great finishing that won us the game. Made even better with the fact that Chris Rickard was in goal for One Team and he is a superb keeper who couldn't stop Craig tonight. Jim made his comeback tonight and will improve for the run out. Andy Geach chipped in with another text book finish while Hoops, Ricko and Gareth Geach watched from the sidelines getting absolutely soaked and frozen half to death. This win equalled out best ever winning streak of  7 wins on the trot.
22/02/2008 Gherkins W 5-3 With 3 first teamers missing through injury [ Jim,Ricko,G.Geach] the carpz called upon the services of Andrew Geach once more and defender Damon Mulready who plays for St Blazey. Gherkins grabbed an early lead which gave the Carpz a massive wake up call and it should have been 10-1 at half time. It was actually 4-1 at half time with Andrew Geach adding 2 more to his tally and going within inches of getting a hat trick. Craig Phillips and Carl Webby Webster scored the others and it really was a question of how many it was going to be. Gherkins though have the championships top scorer amongst their ranks in Ross Masters and he showed why with 2 brilliant finishes during the second half to set up a very nervy last 5 minutes of play. As Gherkins went all out attack in the dying moments, a Carpeteers break away left Craig Phillips clean through and he nearly had enough time to have a drink before coolly slotting home the decisive goal to keep Carps top of the league with 6 wins out of 6.
15/02/2008 Premier Printers W 5-1 The last team to beat us in the league was this team and they had lost 4/4 going into this game. Banana skins were at the ready but Carps won this game well. Despite Gareth Geach scoring his second hat trick in 5 games it was stand in player Andrew Geach who won man of the match and also had the pick of the goals with 2 awesome finishes. Craig did a lot of the donkey work in the midfield tonight despite not scoring and Gav Kitts had to be on top form at the back as Gareth Geach hopped off injured with 10 minutes still to play giving the mighty Hoops his chance to shine properly for the first time this season.
15/02/2008 Gover W 1-0 On paper we were the better side but as with all Gover games, you tend to be in for a gritty and rough ride. Tonight was no different. Ozzie had very little work to do in goal as Gover soaked up the pressure all game. When Gareth Geach was sent to the stands for abusive language after some dodgy reffing decisions it looked like this was going to end 0-0 until Craig Phillips deflected effort somehow found the corner of the net. It was nothing more than Carpeteers deserved.
25/01/2008The Badger's W 2-0 A chance to exact revenge on Gareth Massey and his Badgers after the cup semi final defeat to them 2 weeks ago. This was end to end stuff and Carps were tired from game 1 whereas Badgers were fresh. Badgers were fast going forward but eventually they started to open up at the back. Jim came closest from a corner when he clipped the Badgers post and time was running out in the second half when a Ricko shot was only parried by the goalkeeper and Webby was on hand to fire home the rebound to the deafening cheers of Hoops and Geach [ injured tonight and on crutches ] from the sidelines. With 5 minutes remaining, good work from Craig and Ricko on the right flank suddenly found Webby lurking at the back post to grab his second of the game. The game was far from over as Badgers hit back forcing Ozzie to produce world class saves. He was springing around like a cat in that goal ! Gareth Massey tried a curler which hit the outside of the post but when the whistle went. REVENGE WAS SWEET !!! 3/3 wins so far.
25/01/2008 Neil Truan Motors W 1-0 As a team Neil Truan are probably in the top 5 teams up at Cornwall 6 a side. They always make things extra difficult and win a lot of the balls in midfield. Craig Phillips was marked very tightly tonight and it meant the Carpeteers chances were restricted to a few long range efforts from Ricko that nearly found their mark. However the Carps pressure finally paid off when a Craig Phillips corner found Carl "Webby" Webster at the near post to tuck home the winning goal midway through the second half. There was plenty of last ditch defending from Jim Martyn and Gav Kitts to do after that but eventually the final whistle went.
18/01/2008 Kernow W 8-2 NEW SEASON. We began our campaign in the Championship tonight in amazing fashion and we really hit back hard after an unlucky cup defeat last week on penalties. This was the first time we had let in 2 goals in a match since the 10th August 2007, some 22 games ago. Despite Kernow snatching the lead after barely a minutes play we never looked like being in trouble. Andrew Geach [ in place of the absent Carl Webster ] levelled after 5 minutes and then a G.Geach corner found Ricko who fired Carpz into the lead. G.Geach had made it 3-1 at half time and then the rampage began. 5 second half goals from Carpeteers including 3 for Craig Phillips and 2 more for G.Geach tore Kernow apart with only their main hit man Glynn James pulling a consolation back. Gav Kitts did a great job at the back tonight while Ozzie pulled off his usual stops. This was the largest win of Carpeteers history. Welcome to the Championship.
11/01/2008 The Badgers D 0-0 [L 1-2 pens] CUP SF. In windy conditions...it was hard to get away from the smell of opposition team member Gareth Massey who's smell drifted all over the pitch. His girly hair was bad enough. However it was Massey who had the last laugh this time. Carpeteers got pinned back into their own half thanks to having to play the 15 minute one way only match into head wind that got worse as the evening progressed. Despite this, the Carps had the better chances and Webby came closest as he hit the side netting. Penalties were taken for a place in the final and despite Geach opening the scoring, Ricko hit the post and Webby had his saved to send the Carps crashing out, to the loud whooping delight of girl look-alike Gareth Massey who incidentally...let all his hard working team mates take the penalties as he seemed a bit too scared to step up and take one. I wonder if he paid tonight or if he collected the money from his team mates and did a runner with it like a few months back when he was banned from the competition for theft ?
11/01/2008 Football Furions W 1-0 CUP QF. The Furions had been the all round top scoring team of last season and bagged goals for fun match after match. However, tonight they met a Carpeteers team who excelled in stopping goals from going in whilst being able to score themselves. Gav Kitts and Jim Martyn did the work at the back to keep the usual free scoring Sam Blount well and truly quiet while Danny Denning didn't get his usual time and space in midfield. A great move between Geach and Craig during the first half and finished off by Ricko saw the Carpz run out 1-0 winners to reach the semis for the second season running.
21/12/2007 Skull City W 3-1 In a tight little affair it took something quite special from Craig Phillips to find the net from an impossible angle just before half time. We decided to coast along but paid the price when Skull levelled with only 5 minutes left. We blasted out of our shell then; Ricko rocketing in Webby's shot which had come back off the post. Craig then fired home a 3rd as the seconds ran out and Webby will be disappointed not to get on the score sheet again but he'll get other chances. Overall we have to be pleased with winning the group and are now in the last 8 of the main cup draw on January 4th 2008.
21/12/2007 Puls8 D 0-0 This was deemed to be possibly the biggest game in our history. Puls8 are the double Premiership and current Premiership champions and the winner of this game would win the group. Ricko returned after a 3 game absence but Geachy was out. The Carpz actually had the better chances first half with Ricko wasting 2 good ones and Craig Phillips hitting the side netting. Puls8 pushed on in the second half and a wonder save from Ozzie saving off a Ross Pinhammer thunderbolt and some great defending from Jim and Gavin Kitts kept the scores level by full time. A great result for us which meant a win in our last cup game vs Skull City would mean we go through as group winners.
14/12/2007 The Argonauts W 3-0 Our record vs the Argonauts going into this cup match was good. Played 2 won 2. Even with Argonauts drafting in Premiership players, this could not stop the Carpeteers from marching on with another goal each from Geach and Craig Phillips. Webby also scratched the pad and his goals are always important. Another good win tonight.
07/12/2007 Crocker's Giants W 3-0 Some superb football saw Geach, Webby and Craig grab the goals in a good morale boosting win for the Carpz. Geach also has a claim for a goal of the season contender after a brilliant Carpeteers move.
07/12/2007 Average Joes D 0-0 Average Joes drafted in plenty of Football Furion players who are in a higher division which made things awkward for us. However, positives to take away from the game were, Ricko was missing and also that Ozzie kept a clean sheet. Average Joes are becoming a team we struggle to beat though after 3 encounters now which have all been close.
30/11/2007 Athletico Poltair W 3-1 In our brand new silver kit we took on a new team in the first of 6 cup games. We didn't play so well but with their inexperience of 6 a side we managed to grind out a win in the end. Geachy was back on form with a good strike and another lucky deflected goal off the keeper but when Craig Phillips made it 3-0 in the second half after the ball went in off his back we knew it was our night. A - Poltair did grab a consolation late on.
23/11/2007 Teddingtons W 4-1 It was nice of Tedds to show up this time and they had a very young side compared to their past team selection. However, the Carpz were in party mode and brought in Martyn James and Neil Hoops Slaughter to play a half each along with position reshuffles later in the game including a bemused Geach at sweeper ! However, Carpz made it made it 17 wins in 20 matches and a quick thinking RiCko set Geach up from a corner to slot home the first with his right foot. In the second half, a hoof forward from sweeper Geach saw his kick headed in by a Teddingtons defender for an own goal. Then the moment everyone had been waiting for as we were awarded a penalty and up step Hoops to fire home his first ever competitive goal and send the crowd wild. The excellent Craig Phillips added a fourth before a late mistake at the back gifted Tedds a lucky goal against Ozzie who has been outstanding this season. Champagne flowed after the game along with medals and trophies for us in a brilliant season as div 1 champions.
16/11/2007 Kernow W 2-1 CHAMPIONS of Division one after this win over our closest rivals tonight. Kernow had to beat us and hope we then slipped up next week to stand any chance of ending our title hopes. Within 3 minutes the Carps were off to a flyer as Ricko unleashed a rocket that the keeper couldn't handle. 1-0 Carpeteers. Carps pushed forward for the killer goal and got it with a great effort from Craig Phillips who cant stop scoring of late. What a signing he has been for us this season. Kernow had to score 3 in the second half to stop us taking the title and eventually they began to really put the pressure on. They got their just rewards when their main man Glyn James sprinted clear and pulled a goal back. Ozzie had to be alert in the remaining 5 minutes to see off a few fancy efforts as Kernow threw the kitchen sink into everything. Time was on our side though and we deserved to be champions as the final whistle blew and the celebrations begun.
09/11/2007 The Argonauts W 4-1 The Carpz oozed class as Argonauts felt the strikers power from Geach, Craig and Ricko who tore them to shreds by half time. Jason Beavis was doing double time in goal as shots rained at him left right and centre. Ricko opened the scoring from a Geach corner followed by another cool finish from Craig. Ricko shot in the 3rd and rattled the post as he came closer than ever to getting his first Carps hat trick ever. Meantime Jim and Gav cleared any danger at the back with ease. The partly injured Webby made an appearance in the second half for Rick who had to go off scouting and he was glad the game was all but over and could take it slightly easier. A bizarre own goal from Jim let the Argonauts back into the game near the end but Craig popped up yet again to send us away with another convincing win in this division.
02/11/2007 Average Joes W 2-0 A tenth league win in 11 games for the mighty Carpz as the amazing season continues. Promotion is already ours but the league title is now our aim. Average Joes didn't cause us any problems at the back apart from a couple of efforts in the latter stages that Ozzie comfortably dealt with. Craig Phillips had earlier brilliantly headed us into the lead from a Geach corner and Craig grabbed his second during the second half. It could have been more had Craig not gone all out to get his hat trick but nonetheless the win was already in the bag and he now has 4 goals in 2 games. A late appearance from Hoops was applauded by the travelling support who saw Ricko limp off with a dead leg near the end.
26/10/2007 One Team W 2-0 After this victory tonight we finally gained what we deserved and that was promotion to the championship [ middle division ] . It was difficult at times to contain the Tesco B team tonight who certainly were anything but a B team with the likes of Bobby Lee Johns trying to derail our promotion hopes. Excellent work in midfield from Webby, Jim and Ricko coupled with solid defending from Gav Kitts forced One Team to keep shooting at long range which was never going to trouble Ozzie in goal. Two magical finishes from Craig Phillips at the business end kept us top of the league by 2 points with just 4 games of the season left to play.
19/10/2007 Niles Bakery W 5-1 After such a good run in our first 6 games it looked like we were completely derailing as Niles took a 1-0 lead and were making things very tricky with their usual long ball tactics. It took a bit of inspiration from Craig Phillips to fire us level just before the break and this equaliser gave us the boost we needed for the second half as first Webby and then Geachy scored quality goals to put us in control. The returning Ricko came off the bench to fire the game beyond doubt before man of the match Webby chipped in the icing on the cake goal which capped a fine performance from the Carpz. Great stuff.
12/10/2007 Premier Printers L 0-1 This defeat ended our record 6 game winning streak against a side who had not shown much form so far this season. Carpeteers had some chances but never looked comfortable at all and got a kick in the teeth that might just perk us up on the run in and make us realise that we are not home and hosed just yet.
28/9/2007 Kernow W 3-0 Top vs 2nd but despite carrying a heavy weight striker in Glynn James, they couldn't break through the Carpz defence and later got punished. Rick was missing again as his unlucky injury saga continues to trouble him. Jim and Gavin had a superb game at the back. Webby won every ball tonight in the midfield and looked back to his best, while a penalty from Craig and two neat finishes from Geachy sealed a glorious victory for us. Ozzie had to be on his alert and kept the divisions top scorer at bay on more than one occasion. Hoops got a nice run out at the end as well as Carpeteers surged 5 points clear at the top with 6/6 wins and only one goal conceded all season so far.
21/9/2007 The Argonauts W 2-1 Argonauts fancied causing an upset tonight with the likes of Nathan Ball, Jason Hoare and Dash amongst their ranks but although scoring well, their defence had been leaking like a broken drain pipe recently. Geachy got us off to a great start when his quick thinking from a corner spotted Jason off his line. Any goal from a corner should be applauded with the greatest respect. Jason then kept his team in the game with some great saves. However, in the second half the game swung toward the Argonauts as their pace on the break began to cause us trouble and they deservedly levelled the scores, the first goal we have conceded in 5 games. However, the class just about shone through as Geachy scored a wonder solo effort with his right peg for a change and Argonauts were lucky not to be beaten out of sight as Craig hit the post and Geachy missed a penalty in injury time.
14/9/2007 Average Joes W 1-0 We were top, they were bottom but Average Joes, although seriously in need of a striker, made it really difficult for us to break through them. Ricko was on the sidelines with an in growing toe nail as his unlucky injuries continue to plague him recently and Webby played with a sore neck which meant his usually dominant midfield presence wasn't so good as heading the ball was not an option. Joes goalie kept Craig and Geach at bay for as long as he could but eventually a great pass from Craig found Geachy in good space and he struck the ball home to send the packed stands into a frenzy of cheering and applauding.
7/9/2007 One Team W 3-0 This, our 3rd game of the season was against an improving One Team who were top on goal difference and had won their first 2 games. They held us into the second half and have definitely improved, even without Bobby Lee Johns playing tonight. It took a penalty to break the deadlock that Craig Phillips was more than happy to fire home followed by another good goal. Craig completed his hat trick with another penalty 5 minutes from time as One Team caved in and it could have been 5 or 6 by the end. 2 wonder saves from Ozzie during the match left us with 3 clean sheets in a row. We are top of the table now :)
31/8/2007 Niles Bakery W 1-0 Niles are always well up for a good fight and with new players they were looking very tricky to beat again. A very deep defensive pairing of Gav Kitts and Ricko ensured Ozzie actually had a quiet evening. It took one bit of magic by Mr Geach with a great run down the wing and shot, to settle the score and leave Superman and co seriously annoyed .
24/8/2007 Premier Printers W 2-0 The start of the season couldn't have been any more straight forward. We rained so many chances at the Printers goal the keepers gloves would have been worn out. Geachy celebrated 2 goals but the strikers were also guilty of missing a lot of chances that should have put the tie safer a lot sooner.
17/8/2007 Poltair Predators D 0-0[L3-4pens] We'd all had enough by this time but the Preds fancied a 3rd place play off as they had lost the other semi final to DB's. In a tight game and in near total darkness, the two teams played out a boring 0-0 draw only to see the Preds come out 4-3 in the penalty shoot out that followed.
17/8/2007 FC Redditch L 0-1 Carpeteers outplayed Redditch from start to finish in the semi finals here but once Redditch had got the deflected lead which saw the ball deflect in off one of their players chests from 20 yards out [ bizarre!] they defended in huge numbers and restricted our attack from getting through. We were that close to reaching the final of the main cup. Unlucky boys.
17/8/2007 St Stephens W 3-0 Premiership opposition was always going to be difficult and a St Stephens team with only one defeat in over 20 games was going to be even more difficult to overcome. However Carpeteers were game for this. Working hard through the first half, things were all square at the break. The introduction of Ricko and new signing Craig Phillips completely through St Stephens in the second half as first Craig latched on to a Rick throw in to slot home, Rick fired in from close range to make it two nothing and then Craig ran through to make it three with no reply from the Premiership new boys. All the team worked very hard to keep St Stephens from even having a proper shot at Ozzie although they did clip the post early on in the game.
10/8/2007 St Austell AFC D 2-2 Geachy couldn't play in this game after limping off with a swollen ankle that could see him out for next week but hopefully not. Rich Golley started in attack with Rick and Gav at the back. St Austell took the lead but a thunderous Ricko shot from a corner pass from Jimmy saw Carpz level things before half time. The hard working Rich Golley stretched well to poke the ball past the keeper to send us into the lead midway through the second half only for St Austell to grab a late goal with 2 mins left to leave the teams level. All the guys walked away bleeding from arms and legs after another 2 great performances. This should put us into the last 8 of the main cup.
10/8/2007 Neil Truan Motors W 2-0 Gav Kitts, Ricko and Rich Golley gave Carpeteers their 3rd clean sheet in a row with a solid defensive display as Neil Truan struggled to penetrate a hard working Carpz team. Webby got back into the thick of the action as well and Jimmy had to battle for every ball in midfield as we took a good win against higher league opposition. Ricko slid in Geachy to put us in front, Geachy adding to his impressive goals tally, and Webby fired home the 2nd brilliantly. Truan struggled to create chances but Ozzie made sure any rare shots were dealt with safely.
3/8/2007 One Team W 1-0 One Team have been tricky customers of ours in recent games and Carpz had to keep working for this win. One team never threatened Ozzie in goal [ who actually had a quiet night, he can thank his defence and midfield for that ! ] and One Team would have quite happily settled for a draw. The deadlock was finally broken just inside the second half when Ricko unleashed a fierce shot into the net from 20 yards. This win moves the carps into 2nd in their group and a chance to play among the elite in the final stages if they can get one more win next week.
3/8/2007 Premier Rejects W 4-0 Premier Rejects drafted in Bobby Lee Johns but little could save them as Carpeteers ran riot in the cup. The return of Webby and Ricko in midfield was a bonus but Gareth Geach latched on to some excellent midfield passes to put the game well beyond doubt early in the 2nd half with some real good finishing. . His 2nd Carpz hat trick. Carl Webster kept up his good midfield scoring record as he grabbed the other Carpeteers goal. Kitts and Golley were strong at the back as Rejects struggled to find a way through.
27/7/2007 DB's L 1-2 In the 1st of our cup matches we came up against the Dirty Bastards. This team had finished runner up in the premier league just gone and if Gareth Geach had converted both his penalties before half time this game could have been out of site. Geachy and Ricko linked like demons in the first half causing DB's huge problems with Richard Golley also getting in on the act. In the 2nd half DB's began to get on top and got 2 goals as Carpeteers finally ran out of gas. Carl Webster went close to forcing a draw but his shot hit the outside of the post and Geachy tested the keeper from all angles and was unlucky not to get a 2nd goal for him and the team.
13/7/2007 Gherkins L 0-3 This was a real dog fight as both teams knew a win would send them top. It was very even up until half time when Gherkins seemed to take a shock lead. The introduction of a puls 8 [ premiership champions ] player during the second half swung the game firmly into the favour of Gherkins and having two massive matches in a row [ Gherkins were fresh ] took its toll on the Carps and it all caved in near the end and Gherkins got the killer goals to leave us in 4th place this season and another season in the bottom division. But we should be much stronger next season with Geachy, Webby and Ricko there from the start.
13/7/2007 Gover L 0-2 It was the title decider in many peoples eyes and we couldn't afford to lose but Gover were a stronger team now to the one we whooped 5-1 earlier in the season and they showed their class as they led 2-0 at half time even though stand in striker Andrew Geach and Gareth himself had had one or two good chances. The introduction of a semi fit Ricko in the second half couldn't turn it around but the hard working defence duo of Gav Kitts and Rich Golley managed to block Govers attack well. The game was sadly lost in the first half and Gover defended in masses to stop the Carps getting back into it. Now we had to get a result against the Gherkins.
6/7/2007 Blades D 0-0 We cruised past this team 3 nil just a few weeks ago but tonight they came out stronger and with the Carpz having already played one game. The Blades applied a lot of the early pressure but we soaked it all up and the 2nd half was one way traffic. Lee Lavery and Geachy were unlucky not to get the goal we so desperately wanted but found a Blades goalkeeper in amazing form. Blades could have nicked it near the end all be it for a great save from the master Dan "Ozzie" Osbourne and also a crossbar. This result sent Carpeteers to the top of the 3rd league and with 2 games to play, the champagne is on ice for a massive promotion party. Fingers crossed.
6/7/2007 One Team W 2-0 An out of form One Team came up against a revenge seeking Carpz side who had been denied a point against them last time due to some dodgy reffing. One Team were always 2nd best tonight as Rich Golley and Gav Kitts totally dominated at the back and two good goals from Jack Walker on his debut [ the post denied him his hat trick ] for us gave us another great win. Richard Golley also clipped the post in the 2nd half. Jack was standing in for the absent Webby and with Ricko still out, this win kept us right in the promotion fight.
22/6/2007 FC Kernow W 3-2 Kernow knew they had a tricky match ahead of them tonight and so drafted in a premier league striker from the DB's to give them some much needed firepower and all went well for them up until half time as they casually took a 2-0 lead as we hugely missed the presence of Rich Golley. An amazing solo goal from Geachy lifted the tempo and our chins as then captain fantastic Carl Webby Webster levelled and super sub Nathan Ball tucked home the winner to send the watching crowd into a frenzy and complete the best comeback Cornwall 6 a side has seen for months ! Brilliant stuff. Every player did a superb job to pull off this result that takes us to 2nd place with 4 games left to play.
15/6/2007 Teddingtons W 3-2 With Rick's return immanent after missing the last 4 matches, the Carpz could have done with another win to keep the promotion back to the championship a real possibility. Jim returned from his holiday in the sun with a shot and fluky goal as the goalie let it slip under his hand but they all count ! Tedds hit back instantly but a great shot and goal from Golley and a cool finish from Webby put us in cruise mode. The Tedds main man up front gave Kittsy a real beating in the first half and added a 2nd before half time leaving the stand in for Ozzie in goal, Dan Nicholls absolutely no chance. Kittsy was immense in the 2nd half and there were no goals but both teams had chances to pinch it. Geachy's shooting boots weren't really aiming properly tonight while Dan made some good stops at the other end. Richard Golley played a blinder for the Carpz this evening and he looks back to his best. Ideal.
8/6/2007 Niles Bakery D 1-1 Niles made things very awkward for us tonight with their constant long ball tactics that eventually paid off for them with a goal from Andy Campbell. As the game wore on though, we dominated in all areas especially when their main man Hammy limped off injured after a challenge with our main defender Mr Rock Kitts. With just 5 mins to go we finally got a change of luck as the ref awarded us a penalty and Ian Superman had no chance in goal as Geachy blasted home to get us a point. We were unlucky not to pinch the points in the end but Niles probably deserved a point after adopting difficult tactics for us to play against.
1/6/2007 Blades W 3-0 Carrying on from last weeks great result we totally destroyed the high flying Blades. Jimmy, Geachy and Webby linked up brilliantly in the midfield and sent us up to 2nd in the table. Geachy grabbed a brace and Webby added a third to boost our goal difference as well. It was a faultless display by Golley and Gav Kitts at the back to as the Blades barely troubled the excellent Ozzie.
25/5/2007 Gherkins D 0-0 We stepped our game up for the top of the table clash against the Gherkins and were unlucky not to come away with more than a point. Ozzie Safe Hands got STAR MAN FOR THE WEEK as he made one or two great saves to keep us in it at the death as Gherkins hit the post. Geachy went closest for us as he rattled the crossbar during the 2nd half.
18/5/2007 One Team L 0-1 This was a dreadful performance by the Carpz as victory went the way of the Tesco B team. Richard Golley looked rusty after a week away and missed 2 great chances along with stand in captain Webby. Geachy managed to stick the ball home for us with just seconds remaining but the goal was disallowed for being in the area. A poor decision. Ricko filmed the game from the trees !
11/5/2007 Gover W 5-1 This was the biggest victory of the Carpeteers career so far. New signing Gareth Geach proved a sensation as he hit an amazing debut hat trick with Webby and Ricko also grabbing good goals. We had to work hard though as Gover held out at 1-1 til midway through the 2nd half before the class really began to tell. The ref was poor and didn't pick up on some awful challenges from Gover who had men sent off for injuring Rick who hobbled off and Geachy who had his shorts pulled down ! Unbelievable but what a win !
4/5/2007 FC Kernow L 0-1 Kernow were very decent last season but didn't show as much tonight. However, again the Carpz played the best football without winning. It cant continue like this. Rick was missing for tonight's games and hopefully with him back next time, the Carpz can be a stronger outfit ?
4/5/2007 Teddingtons L 0-2 A dominant display by the Carpz was met with total disbelief as Teddingtons stole the win with two goals completely against the run of play. This was a sickener for the boys.
20/4/2007 Niles Bakery W 1-0 This game is always a close one and it took a Carlo Webster goal to make the difference by the end. The guys played well tonight and this is a great start to the new season.
13/4/2007 Young Gunz L 0-2 This result knocked us out of the SHIELD after coming 3rd of 6 in our cup group. The Young Gunz proved slightly too strong and it was Mr Slugger Sleeman who finished The Carps off after nicking the ball from Rich Golley late on. Rick was absent and will be for the next 2 games. Carl 'Webby' Webster will be filling in as captain.
30/3/2007 FC Kernow L 0-1 The Kernow guys were really young and fast and left The Carps for dead in the first half and led 1-0. It could have been more as well. Dan Nicholls pulled off some good saves to keep us in it. The Carps came back into it 2nd half and Rick and Gavin linked up well in the final few minutes and the Kernow goalie had to make a string of good saves from corners and crosses but the equaliser didn't come in time.
30/3/2007 The Foxes D 0-0 A no score draw with The Foxes was disappointing in the end as Carpeteers pretty much had all the chances. The ball just would not go in and Dan Nicholls in goal to replace the absent Ozzie had very little to do at the back all game.
23/3/2007 Gherkins W 3-1 Things looked to be going from bad to worse for the Carps when Gherkins took the lead against the run of play but Jim pulled us level just before the break. A second half thunderbolt shot from RiCko put the Carps into the lead before new signing Gavin Kitts hit home with a debut goal and it could have been 4-1 by the end. A good performance, well done !
23/3/2007 Italion Stallions L 0-1 This was going to be the toughest game in the group and so it proved. The Stallions ran the show for most of the game and it was just one lapse in defence that got them their goal. Apart from that, the Carps defended well and had a couple of chances to level but the result was probably about fair in the end.
16/3/2007 Neil Truan Motors W 1-0 The start of the cup tonight and with Rick drunk on the sidelines it was down to the others to do the business with just 9 mins each way. Craig Phillips showed what the Carps are lacking up front as he blasted home the winner in the second half and put up a solid display. The man of the match award would have to go to Ozzie though who put his body in the way of some great shots from the Truan Motor boys and kept a clean sheet for us. It was good to end the losing run and a good cup run beckons perhaps ? ;)
9/3/2007 Dad's Team L 2-4 If we lost we were down but a win and we stayed up. A draw was a risky option as other results had to go our way. Things started off brightly as Rick blasted a shot into the top corner after 10 minutes but Dad's responded before half time. Then, 5 minutes of madness saw the Carps concede 3 sloppy goals, 2 of which were lucky anyway and that left a mountain to climb. The quick thinking Golley set Rick up off a free kick with 5 minutes left and his thunderous shot went in. At 4-2 there was still hope but the ball wouldn't sit kindly as the Carps put the pressure on in the last 5 minutes with Luke missing a one on one with the goalie. Thanks to all those that came to support us on this night. You know who you are !
2/3/2007 Tesco L 0-1 Both teams went into this game on poor runs and it was a very even contest from start to finish. It was perhaps Carpeteers that had the better chances first half as Rick narrowly shot wide from close range and perhaps should have done better. Tesco kept pressing second half and a costly slip from Luke [ who actually played a blinder ] near the end let Mike Rickard shoot home past Ozzie to put us on our worst run of form since the team set up.
23/2/2007 Neil Truan Motors L 1-2 No doubt about it, we played some of our best football here tonight but again we let in 2 slack goals in the second half and couldn't recover. Jim, Luke and Golley knocked the ball around really well in midfield but in the end all the subs that Neil Truans used outran us for fitness. In the last 5 minutes The Carps battled back with Webby setting up Rick to stab home a consolation with the ref not even seeing it ! Both teams had to tell the ref it was a goal ! Another game we were shocked to lose.
16/2/2007 Niles Bakery L 1-2 A big relegation match was on here tonight and the first half belonged to The Carpeteers and we were very unlucky to be at 0-0 at half time. Niles got a breakaway goal after the break and this forced Rick into attacking midfield as Luke dropped to defence and within 5 minutes a RiCko thunderbolt levelled the scores. It was end to end stuff then and sadly it was Niles who sneaked the goal after some great saves from goalkeeper Ozzie but which left everyone scratching their heads wondering where it all went wrong.
9/2/2007 F.C Redditch L 1-2 The support on the sidelines from Lavery/Hoops/RiCko and a few others couldn't spur the guys to see off Redditch and two goals from the quick Matt Bale soon left the Carps in deep trouble. Nicky Thompson sealed the defensive cracks second half while the introduction of Lee Lavery gave the Carps a new lease of life and with a few minutes left on the clock the hard working Rich Golley scored a blinder to make it interesting. We should have got the draw ! This was also Dan's last match before switching to the Tornadoes.
9/2/2007 Loco Luxulyan L 1-3 The Carps started brightly against Loco taking the lead through a good move and Webby firing the ball in. The first half was all Carpeteers and Dan and Jim were guilty of missing chances to add to the lead as Webby ran the show in midfield. However, once Loco levelled the score, things took a turn for the worse and the score opened up and heads dropped. With Rick missing the game with flu things got worse when Dan was sent off 5 minutes from time. One to forget.
26/1/2006 Young Gunz D 0-0 Young Gunz were top of the table and we knew we had to defend with our lives. With Triggs being removed from the team, thank god [ he can blame his kock ]...Webby was put in as last man and it was a full on assault for 40 mins as we rode our luck at times and gave it our all. The hero of the day was none other than our goalkeeper Ozzie who had had a nightmare last week against Dad's team but tonight showed why he can be the best keeper in the league. He stopped everything and we were the first team to keep a clean sheet against the Young Gunz. Be very proud boyz !
19/1/2007 Dad's team L 2-3 Going for our 4th win in a row and with Dad's team bottom of the table. surely it would be a cake walk ? Well...with wind blowing in our faces first half and all our team getting dragged out of position we suddenly found ourselves 3-0 down at half time and in total disarray. RiCko as captain brought in Rich Golley to steady the ship at the back 2nd half and Rick pushed into a more attacking role in place of Jimmy and the Carpeteers roared back; with first Webby slotting home, and then Dan feeding Rick in to get it back to 3-2. Sadly time ran out and our good run was at an end.
12/1/2007 Tesco W 1-0 We got revenge on Tesco in the cup after our 5-0 drubbing last season and tonight...man of the match Luke Styles...along with RiCko...defended the Carpeteers goal with everything they had. Tesco sit alot of men behind the ball but Webby, Jim and Dan kept working hard and with 5 minutes remaining Dan unleashed one of his stinging shots that the keeper never moved for and we took another great win over a Tesco team...unbeaten in 6 games this season!
5/1/2007 Neil Truan Motors W 2-1 With Triggs failing to show up...Luke also had no means of getting to the game. We were grateful of Rich Golley dropping in to defence along with contributions from Nick Thompson and the improving Gav Kitts. This was always going to be tough and with Ozzie also out unwell...Dan Nicholls had to play in goal despite being totally laden with flu. Jimmy Jim ended a 13 match goalless run with 2 brilliant goals and Truan kept the pressure on with them grabbing a controversial [ inside the area] goal. Truan were unbeaten in 5 games this season until tonight.
15/12/2006 Niles Bakery W 1-0 We had never beaten Niles in 2 attempts and they were stubborn yet again this evening in torrid conditions that evened the game up a bit and stopped us from playing our usually good passing game. Dan and Rick combined well early doors and it was Dan's cross to Rick and a shot through the keepers legs that gave us the lead. We were pinned back in our own half through the last 15 minutes as the wind was with them. Rick's powerful run to goal to make it 2-0 ended when he was hacked out and Niles were down to 5 men but we needed this win.
8/12/2006 FC Redditch D 1-1 Our losing run finally came to an end but how we never won the match beggars belief. We dominated from start to finish and fell behind completely against the run of play and with a shot that took the ball in thanks to the wind...impossible for Ozzie to save. Dan got us back in it shortly afterwards and from then on...it was all Carpeteers.
1/12/2006 Loco Luxulyan L 0-2 It was Rick who was missing in this game against a team that had already beaten us last season 4 -1. It was an even game most of the way but Loco took their chances and won again. This is a team we really need to concentrate harder on beating next time around. And we have only scored one goal in five matches which is also a concern.
24/11/2006 The Young Gunz L 1-4 With Luke dropping out last minute and Triggs turning up late...we were forced to bring on sub Nicky T. It was not how we wanted to prepare for the game knowing how good the Young Gunz were but we contained them in the first half quite well. In the second half they took the lead before Dan levelled and Rick wasted 2 good chances when in on goal. When Dan limped off injured with 10 mins left we knew it was nearly impossible to hang on with a man down and no subs. We conceded 3 right at the end but didn't deserve to lose by that much.
17/11/2006 Barney's Boys L 0-1 These boys gave us a torrid time in our first match back in September and we knew what to expect. They defended real deep but we missed the best chance of the match when Webby shot wide from the edge of the D with the goal gaping at his mercy. Just as spot kicks loomed again, they hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner to win. Our only happiness from the evening was that Barneys Boys lost in the final ! ha ha !
17/11/2006 Tesco D 0-0 Won 2-1 on pens First stage of the knockouts and we were out for revenge against a Tesco side that thumped us 5 - 0 only a few weeks ago. We held them off well this time and probably had the best chance with Rick's shot being saved from close range. The game ended 0-0 this time and that meant penalties and sudden death for a place in the semi finals. Dan tucked his spot kick away but Tesco replied. Rick blasted his home well and Sean Sambells missed his kick for Tesco to send us into the next round. REVENGE WAS SWEET !
10/11/2006 The Dukes D 0-0 They were top of our cup group without conceding any goals and apparently the team to avoid at all costs...but we gave them their hardest test to date. Their defence had huge holes in it allowing Jim and Rick plenty of runs on goal. We should have won when Webby stroked the ball inches wide and Rick's shot bounced off the underside of the crossbar and away to safety.
3/11/2006 The Foxes W 1-0 We tried our hearts out against this team...two divisions higher than us ! We waited for our chances to come along and it was the captain, Rick who blasted home the only goal of the game to give us a real morale boosting victory.
3/11/2006 Gover W 2-0 Dan scored two goals [ a deft little lob to open the scoring ] against a Gover side still learning the ropes. They will learn in time to be a little less gobby perhaps. We never looked in trouble and if luck had been with us...Dan and Jim would have added more to the score line.
27/10/2006 FC Chenpump D 1-1 A difficult side to play at the best of times and we never really got into this game at all. We didn't really deserve to get anything out of this match but a good run past two defenders in the final minute by Rick and a pass to Dan who shot home, gave us a nice draw which we would have settled for beforehand anyway.
27/10/2006 Neil Truan Motors L 0-1 The first of our cup matches and this game really could have gone either way. The crucial factor though was an own goal scored by Dan's mate Ian who stood in for the absent Triggs. Ozzie will be kicking his heals that he let the back pass roll under his foot.
20/10/2006 Niles Bakery D 0-0 A must win game to avoid relegation and with the captain out, it wasnt going to be easy. In a game where the Carpeteers made most of the chances...Niles Bakery held on yet again to relegate us into Division 3 and become our bogie team.
13/10/2006 Gherkins W 3-2 We had to re-group straight away for a tricky tie against these. We came out fired up to make amends for the Tesco game and stormed into a 3-0 lead with goals from Dan, Jim and Webby. Near full time though and our energy levels were virtually gone and they got 2 back before hitting the bar in the last few seconds. We held on for our first win though !
13/10/2006 Tesco L 0-5 Was always going to be tough and we got the tactics wrong with Dan starting at the back instead of Rick who played as lone striker. It was 4 - 0 by half time and there was no way back. One to forget.
6/10/2006 Real Laboratory D 1-1 A must win game for us as they were bottom of the table but with windy conditions it made the game very even with few chances being created. Jim sneaked a scrappy goal in after the break off his knee ! but they hit us straight back to draw the match.
29/9/2006 Loco Luxulyan L 1-4 We played the better football for the first half of this game and took the lead through Webby which was no more than we deserved. However...as the game went on...their experience began to tell, and once they took the lead the floodgates opened up. !
22/9/2006 Niles Bakery L 0-1 Rick and Trigggs sat out the first half as a chubby Tom Lal guest starred but the team found themselves a goal down at HT. With Rick and Triggs on in the 2nd period, the game swung into one way traffic as the Carpeteers attacked the opposition from all angles but somehow the goal just wouldn't come.
22/9/2006 FC Chenpump D 0-0 Chenpump were top of the table when we clashed here and we knew we had to adapt quick after our defeat to Barney's Boys last time. Rick and Triggs held the back line well and in the end we created one or two chances and should have grabbed the win when Dan's shot smashed against the crossbar with just a few minutes remaining.
15/9/2006 Barney's Boys L 0-3 As it turned out...these guys were about as difficult as it got in this league and they gave us a lesson to remember in our first ever match. All of us were trying to find our best positions and we got it totally wrong despite Jim hitting the post for us in the very first minute !
