Players have come and gone but at last it seems we have a team capable of challenging for the major honours. At the end of last season, when all our hard work was undone by a night to forget when we lost our last 2 games to miss out on promotion, it had been a bitter pill to swallow. We knew we had to regroup and prove a point.
The season started brightly with a straightforward victory over Premier Printers that got rid of any early season cobwebs. Gavin Kitts, who missed the first game of the season, proved to be vital at the back for us all season after initially being signed by Ricko to replace Dan Nicholls in attack.
Gav was adamant to let in no more than 5 goals all season and this was nearly achieved had it not been for a lucky goal near the end of our last game to make it 6 against for the season.
The Carpeteers no doubt missed Ricko during the Easter / Summer season of 2007 when a bad case of whiplash left him on the sidelines for over 7 weeks and his return at the start of this campaign was a boost. However, it took until the last 4 games for him to really find his feet again after yet another 4 or 5 games on the sidelines through injury.
Now getting back to fitness, Ricko can hopefully captain the side to promotion again next season.
The signing of Gareth Geach was one the Carpeteers had doubts about in the beginning as no one knew if he was good or just another donkey ! but he soon proved to be a human goal scoring machine and he has had another great season bagging 10 goals. His partnership with Craig Phillips has finally cemented together well and they must be up their with the best in all the leagues. Geach's form dipped slightly towards the end of the season as the ball boys had their work cut out trying to find his next shot into Poltair School fields but their were times when his goals, [ particulary aginst Niles Bakery W 1-0, and Kernow W 3-0 ] were just breathtaking quality from the top draw. He remains vital to our challenge for next season.
Craig Phillips added extra strength to the Carpeteers at the start of this season [ and became the top scorer this season ] to the dislike of Richard Golley who decided to join Tornadoes. Golley's loss was a big one for the guys to take but Craig's signature could not be ignored and he turned the Carps from promotion contenders into runaway champions. His goals, mainly in the second half of the season were great to watch and his strength on the ball set up many chances. Along with Geach the Carpz now have 2 amazing strikers.
Of course with Golley departing it left a big hole in the defence that needed filling. Ricko quite happily dropped in there to fill it but this took something away from the attack and so Jim was slowly introduced to the job of playing alongside Gav at the back.
As the games went on, Jim grew with confidence, and ended the season with a champions medal he throughly deserved. Meantime, with Ricko pushing forward into his favoured midfield roll, the Carpz suddenly had an extra boost in their attack.
The ride to the top of the league could not have been done so simply without the rock in the centre of the field which is Carl Webster. He's been given the job of finding the net in recent seasons but must be happy to see Craig, Geach and Rick alongside to help him out. His neat touches and assists have created lots of our 35+ goals this season and the award for best goal must go to him for his delightful chip to score in the 5-1 hammering of Niles Bakery in mid season. Webby will relish the chance to return to the Championship but will hope to stay fit after a few niggling injuries started to creep in after a long hard season.
It must be said that without our goaly this season we would have conceded probably twice as many goals and probably struggled to win the title. Ozzie has been a revelation for the Carpz this season and now that all the players are well and truly behind him [ some players that left the team before were not ] he has grown in confidence. He has been helped by a good defence this year in Jim and Gav but his last gasp saves have kept us going strong. 7 clean sheets in 14 games is a good record by any standards and it also meant the Carpeteers had the best defence out of all the 24 teams in Cornwall 6 a side.
We didnt concede more than one goal in any game this season and bizarrely, lost only once which was at the half way point. Premier Printers snatched a 1-0 victory on an off night for us that threatened to derail us but we hit back with 6 straight wins to win 13/14 matches out of the whole season.
Finally we thank Martyn James for his participation on the final game of the season and Neil Hoops Slaughter who cheered us on all season from start to finish. Hoops has been the number one fan all along and highlights include his slanging match with Bobby Lee Johns from the touchline as One Team were defeated 2-0 by us and the penalty that Hoops seemed destined to score on presentation night that saw him stick his first ever Carpz goal away into the net to a huge ovation from players and fans alike. A truly memorable ride from game 1 to the fantastic champagne celebrations that followed our final game of the season where every player got their own champions trophy.
Well done everyone...lets keep it together...and as Hoops would say 'keep it on the ground' and 'talk to each other ' .
Lets win again in the Championship next season.............
